I've "heard" that you should run a wastegate spring that is rated at least 1/2 of what boost you plan on running.

For example, if you run 24psi then you should use a spring thats rated to be at least 12psi. 28 = 14 min. and so on.

If this is correct, what would happen if I run a spring that's rated to low for the boost I'm running?

Or is this entire concept BS?
 
it's true, general rule is to keep the boost at no more than 2x the spring pressure

you can get inconsistent boost if you run more than 2x
 
Where is a good source for the TiAL springs? I just can't see how they can charge $30 + $10 shipping for a spring! I need a 13 or 14.5 psi spring for my 38mm TiAL.

the spring price is wirth it, it's not an ordinary spring guys, it costs us a boatload to have them made to the specs we ask for

an example is a porsche guy needed a 13psi spring for his race car (he ended up needing a 7psi spring but i will talk about that later...something got lost in kpa to in/hg translation lol) anyway...our highest spring is 12psi...i called up the company that does our springs and to order two (2) 13 psi springs to our spec, it would be $296 for EACH spring if we ordered 50 it would still be $20 each.

so i then set about trying to make a 12psi spring a 13psi spring by trying various methods, like using a 35mm valve seat to compress it a bit more, stepping it up with washers....nothing worked, that damn spring opened when it should @24 in/hg every time.

this is why it is worth the cost :)

china spring break and change molecular properties with heat, ours do not
 
I'm curious...why 1/2? What happens if you run more boost or less boost? Boost Creep? Does it get worse the futher you stray?
