My old adjustable waste gate is leaking. I found a used one for my 84. It looks adjustable but the acuator looks bigger and it has two vacuum line nipples on it. The one on the inside closest to the arm still has the hose with the y-connector and the hoses to the turbo and selinoid. Where does the other one hook up to and what is it for. Thanks.

it SOUNDS like it is a stock 84/85 Wastegate Actuator....If i remember correctly the line furthest away from the Arm is the one with the Y on it, and the Nipple on the inside runs up to the Vacume block on the top of the TB.....

I just capped off the inside Nipple, and things seem to be working normally...

It IS a stock actuator---see the attachment, hope it helps!

Sounds like you were running an 86/7 style wastegate. The 84/5 actuators had two lines. One ran to the vacuum block, the other to the Y. The one to the vacuum block is not really needed. Just don't hook the lines up the wrong way, or you'll have unlinited boost! HTH

Thanks guys, especially for the picture. It had an aftermarket adjustable waste gate on it. And I believe it has been bad from the start. But know that I've been through $3000 worth of turbo schooling, that is all my bolt ons I've done. I think I should finally have it.
If it is stock, do they come with the adjustable arm. This one has one. If so, there should be no need to get an after market one, should there?
Thanks.

What you probably have is a replacement stock wastegate. To my knowledge, the factory wastegate rods were not adjustable, but most ALL replacement wastegate rods ARE adjustable...probably because the WG itself is common to many applications, but each application has a different rod length.

Yea you got the 84-85 waste gate , i just run the line that go's to the y fitting and the other i caped off.

good luck, and cool pic bfh

Just put it on and hooked the outside one to the y and the inside one to vacuum block. It's amazing how much better these cars run when you actually have something to control the boost. I "assumed" when I sent the turbo off to be rebuilt that they checked the wastegate. It now makes sense why my spool up was so slow and why I had to adjust my arm out so far to keep the boost from pegging out.
I'll try plugging the extra line and see how that does, unless someone wants to explain why and how two vacuum lines where used.
Thanks (If it wasn't for this website, I'd really be in trouble)

I'll take a guess. :)

If you were running real low boost (long actuator arm), the spring tension may not be enough to hold the WG shut. Then the vacuum would help keep the WG shut.

These turbos were designed for generic applications. They were existing AirResearch products, not Buick. Since we run higher boost, the vacuum line isn't needed.

I find the vacuum side of the actuator tends to leak long before the pressure side. This creates a large vacuum leak. So it's a good idea to remove the line and plug the vacuum port on the throttle body, IMO.
