while driving my 87 gn 70 are lower, temp. reads about 170, when i get to about 85 and higher on the free way temp goes to 220 - 225 until i get back down under 70, temp goes back down to 170- 180. is that ok ? are do i need a high flow water pump, for top end speed ? i cant go far with those high temps at top end speed. " outside temp about 85" i have a 160 thermostat can anyone give me some advice. "thanks burke"

Seems a little too high for my liking. I would flush your radiator out and make sure that fins arent clogged up. Also make sure your fan relays are coming on when thier supposed to, ( although there should be sufficient airflow at 85 to keep it cool). Also at those speeds your trans fluid and engine oil are going to heat up, and the coolers are in the radiator (go figure:rolleyes: ) If you are worried about it(which I would be), I would run external coolers for both oil and trans, and not use the any of the OEM "coolers". I drove my car to New Jersey on a 95 degree day and temps didnt go over 190, and I was cruising at about 75mph. Also how many miles are on the car? Maybe it could use another pump.

Before you replace the water pump you may want to check for any airflow restrictions. It's posible that your water pump is cavitating at higher speeds but usualy a bad water pump will show up at lower speeds. Check for airflow restrictions around the radiator (don't forget to check the fins of the radiator too, if they're bent or smashed you won't have enough airflow). Try to look into the radiator it's self, the tubes could be clogged corroded or there could be alot of scale build up. I've also seen (in rare instances) A: a weak lower hose that collapses at higher speeds or B: bad coolant itself cause overheating.

Edit: Sorry to post the same things as dailydrifter, he must have posted while I was writing, never was a fast typer.

"thanks for your advice" here's what i have, new aluminum rad. without cooler, external trans. line to cooler for trans. external oil line to fiter with no cooler? 12" dual unit flex a lite fans run when keys on, also i have a front mount inter cooler, miles 86,468, ive had car about six months,95 regal gs said water pump could be cavitating at higher speeds? i will take your advice and add a external oil cooler, see if that helps, if not high flow water pump? when you took your trip to new jersry did you have front mount inter cooler ? " any other advice? " thanks daily drifter & 95regal gs burke

Yeah I have a front mount but it not one of the big ones, I still have the stock rad fan to. From your info given it shouldn't be running that hot. I also dont know if going to an external oil cooler would be really worth it. Also i'm a little confused do you currently have the rad and external trans cooler?? If you do get a rad I wouldnt get one with the coolers, Griffin mades a fairly cheap one the "kindda" fits well with a little tough love. Also check you rad cap and make sure its still good, if its weak you lowered your boiling point and would cause overheating quicker. But 95 GS brings up a good point to with the pump cavitaion at higher rpm's. I would replace the t-stat and water pump to see if it changes, and maybe a new cap. The make Water Wetter to I dont know if this will really help though.

Well, the aluminum radiator rules out rad problems (pretty much). Also, check your belt tension, poss. belt could be slipping, though you would probably hear that. Check to make sure that none of your hoses are kinked. Oh, are you loosing any coolant?

my front mount covers most of the rad. i know thats part of the problem . the aluminum rad. has no coolers. the trans oil runs to a external cooler, the rad. cap seems good & tight & its 16# is that ok? would you go with a high flow pump?& 160 t-stat? car runs so good at low speed around town, with no temp. problem. only have temp. problem at constant high speed. will try new pump &stat. thanks

belt tension ok & hoses , not loosing coolant , will be installing new pump& stat.

Replace the radiator. It is not working efficiently at those speeds on the high way. Seen it many of times.
