GM coats most (if not all ?) of their steel frames with a waxy, greasy, black, rust preventive coating. Unfortunately, it also rubs off easily, or washes off if solvent gets on it.

has anyone figured out What this coating is, and where to get it?

I've got a number of spots that have worn off, and I'm more interested in retaining the "original" look.

tia.

It's called GM Chassis Black. It's fine until petroleum products like brake fluid and power steering fluid get on it, then it softens up quite a bit. Also, your jack will tend to smear it around. You can buy it from an automotive paint supplier by quart or gallon.

well, I checked today at a local autobody repair supplier ... they had no clue what I was talking about. Their only suggestion was "check at the dealer". Been there, done that, to no avail.

If anyone has heard of a specific name for the product(s), would greatly appreciate it. I might be able to find it thru Google or Thomas register.

Many variations of descriptions haven't tuened up anything in a google search, yet. Of course I didn't try to view all the 1000's of web pages the search returned !

Thx.

I can get you a PPG paint code for their chassis black this week. It is not waxy like the factory stuff but it is more solvent resistant, and the correct color. It does help to prevent rust, and slow down what is already there.

I was cleaning my GN frame and saw the stuff your talking about. Its just like you said , greasy and waxy not a paint and not any type of GM chassis black I have ever seen. The GM chassis black is an thinner asphalt based product and does wash off quite esily with solvents, so does this stuff but it is much thicker and much more greasy-waxy. I am calling one of my GM factory guys and lets see what he can do. I would like to get some of this stuff too.
