Well the rebuild seemed good but after some miles I have noticed some problems.

Reverse works fine cold but slips after warm up.

AND

Warm and cold the car often will not start in first if I take off slow. If I give it some gas it will pop into first.

The part throttle shifts seem to be a bit delayed and very hard - especially the 1-2 shift.

AND

If I put the shifter in 1, the trans seems to lock up a bit like it is in forward and reverse - and I don't have a brake.

My thoughts are band too tight and or the shim that the VB kit had me put in front of the TV plunger spring has caused the TV to be to deep in the bore.

What do you guys think? (No pressure readings right now.)

TIA,

Back home now and I plan to get a guage to check pressures.

While I'm doing that, any of the experienced guru's got an idea as to what's wrong?

Line pressures?

I'm certainly not a guru, but I did send you a PM you might like.
BTW, what were those line pressure readings?

Got it. After finding some PM's, I changed my settings to email me when I get a PM.

That was some good stuff. I really liked the link to the TV 101 site. Will try to get a gauge today and will post results.

Thanks,

I think you have a pretty good handle on

what may be going on with this. What shift kit did you go with?

As far as the T.V line up goes, the stock tv plunger spring has a free length measurement of 1.900. Most kits have a spring that will measure in the 2.060 range, and that is ok, but i would't add anymore to it by installing a shim. The next thing to check is to look at the tv valve itself {the valve in the bottom of the bore}. When you depress the plunger fully, the tv valve should move all the way to the bottom of the bore {every time}. There is a drilled hole in the middle of the tv line up, the tv valve should slide past and open that hole every time the tv plunger is depressed. Some kits have you install a helper type spring on the tv valve and sometimes this causes the tv valve to hang up and not uncover the drilled hole fully.

A quick test to see if the band\servo clearance is too tight : Vehicle off, Have the rear tires off the ground {on jackstands}, put the trans in neutral, grab the drive shaft and by hand see if you can turn the driveshaft both ways {one way will be tough, the other way will be easy}. If the drive shaft won't turn in any one direction the band\servo clearance is too tight.

Thanks Mike

I'll try the drive shaft test.

I used the PTS kit. Thanks for the spec's on the spring. If the spring was changed to a longer one, and a helper shim is added... I hope the line pressure test will show if there is a problem with the TV valving.

I made sure all the valves moved freely in their bores, but I did not know to look for some of the things you said to check.

Thanks, I now feel like I have enough things to do to make it worth it to get under the car and start wrenching.

The PTS kit is an excellent kit.

I've seen the spacer you speak of. Just make sure of the tv plunger spring free length. I believe the spacer was made for the stock spring at 1.900. :D

Steve, did you get the line pressure checked? I had a problem with 2nd gear starts with that TV spacer installed, but no other problems. Have you looked at your low/reverse clutches? Maybe
the gasket by the low/rev apply hole blew out or the cup plug in the case was damaged or omitted. How is the color of your fluid?
