Bummer. I always thought of American Racing stuff as 'cheap'. The Weld brand is much more respected IMO.

I know some have had issues with the Pro Stars cracking, but my brother had a set on his daily driver GN and never had any issues... Maybe they had some sort of quality control issues

Expensive hose reels!

Yeah, and I wouldn't call them cheap when I just bought some at over 300 a rim!

I can remember paying $89 for a 15" Drag Star out of the Jegs and Summit catalogs. You cant tell me that wasn't a cheap wheel! There was a reason they stamped date codes on them way back when. And why they also had a warning stating they weren't street legal! The only thing missing was a "made in China" stamping on them.

FWIW, no 3.5" wide wheel of any brand is DOT legal, and those were the only wheels in the pro star/draglite series that weren't DOT legal. The rest were legal. I'm sure the dates on the wheels was for obvious reasons. Might want to get your facts straight before posting.

Also, I've owned numerous sets of Welds, at least 8 or so sets, probably more, never had an issue. I'm not easy on them either. Tons of racers use them, but when they are over torqued and mis-used, they will have problems. Whose fault is that?

I haven't looked at their stuff in a while. Way back their stuff used to be the bargain-basement stuff that tried to look like other more expensive wheels. Or I may be thinking of someone else. Either way it's odd that Weld can't stand on its own - I thought their wheels were very popular. I have a pair of Draglites with a 1992 date stamps. No problems with them. My 'everyday' wheels are newer Draglites.

You think it's because they cater more to the racing set when they should be catering to the poseur set? Seems like people are more concerned with show rather than go anymore.

Well than you're going to be waiting forever. Stop reading USA Today and get the real scoop from the papers that specialize in no BS reporting.

The Deroit Free Press http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

Automotive News http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage?ws=uf

GM aint going away. Ford and Chrysler are doing slighty worse. News scoop! Nissan and Mitsubishi are headed to the dumper too. And Toyota has slipped a couple of notches in quality because of their recalls. Yep your right, all of these American companies are going to sh!t.

BTW the street legal warning is stamped on all the sizes not just the skinnies.

I would imagine the money went with Greg Weld or who ever was running that company. Somebody either got greedy or incompetence in management drove them into the ground. You dont stay around for 30 years and just suddenly fold.
