What do you think of using a GN for a Daily Driver

Hey guys I currently have a 73 Dodge Dart Sport but while I like the car don't really get a lot of use out of it...mabey 1-2 trips a month and thats it. I have always liked GN's(and T-Types/WE4's) and think I would get a lot more use out of one of those. I would actually drive it most of the Summer3-4 times a week unless it was raining just because IMO its more reliable and well the Power everything and A/C for the summer is nice . Anyone driving a mildly modded one for a "driver" type car? and how are they holding up after 20 or so years as far as drivers go? Also how is parts availability...id have to guess a LOT better than 60/70's muscle car parts..... . well thanks for any replies in advance.

I had an 87 gn that went 12.70's at 108 mph(22psi) on goodyear eagles. All power a/c big stereo system. Daily driven to the mall the movies work etc. Full coverage insurance, a steel neck, and alarm were a must. No outta the ordinary probs. alternator here starter there type stuff. 14- 15 psi max on 93 oct. I miss that car.

although i dont have one yet. i think it would be very reasonable to daily drive a GN or T. yes there 20 years old now, but must of the ones you get have been taken care of pretty well, even a car with 120k miles on it is low for the age of the car. yes it might have some "old car problems", but thats the price you pay to have one, its to be expected. as for parts availability, i think it would be good, there arent a lot of GN and Ts out there but theres a ton of other g-bodys. not all of the parts will interchange but i bet a lot do. when i do get a GN or T i will be using it for a daily driver. one think is a must like jasjamz said, security. these things seem to be thief magnents, so you put MULTIPLE security devices on the car to keep the baddies away, of course nothing stops a tow truck.

It's easy, 11's on pump gas and alky. daily driver both cars over 120K on each.

The parts you really need most are out there and easily found.

lol true but I guess to me it would be almost like daily from the 2 X a month the Dart sees the road . :biggrin:

If you can stomach door dings and rock chips, they aren't any different than any other 80's car (except they have balls).I'd still be driving mine daily, but 93 octane is still pricey (87 works, but no fun driving without boost).

I daily drive mine, its my only car. I regularly take hour and a half trips.

Ive put maybe 20k on it since I bought it and I have never had a problem except when the tranny took a dump. It was still driveable so it didnt leave me stranded it was just shifting stupid. I still drove it like that for a few weeks while I waited on a new tranny. Now its good as new.

The car has 150k on it and runs mid 7s in the 8th. Its setup the same as it is for the strip.

The key is staying on top of maintenance and replacing parts as they wear out. On mine, I redid the front suspension, new steering box, rag joint, the works, make sure you change the fluids, and keep an eye on your gauges.

As far as paint chips go, I dont worry, since half my car is primer. I would definately suggest some sort of anti theft method.

I don't think they are good daily drivers, mostly because they are 15+ year old cars.

While I cant vouch for the paint, my headliner doesnt sag, all of my dash lights work, and my carpet is in pretty good shape. Floormats work wonders. This is with 150k

Having a roll cage helps because the back seat and floor stays clean when I cant haul more than one other person with me

And if you can keep it away from the thieves, and you'll need more than just kill switches at the rate GN's are stolen these days. I'd opt for a Limited T without the bulging hood..the ultimate sleeper if I was looking to get one as a daily driver..that way the theives don't pay attention to it.

amen to that. garage/trailer queens piss me off. cars are meant to be driven. they dont like to sit.

lol I dont want a sleeper if anything id probably ADD the hood to a T-Type . Never was a "sleeper" type guy .

i have enough junk in the garage to add a car as a dust collector.
the way i see it these cars are about $15,000
your SUV cost about $25,000 and you drive it every day to every where.
whats the big flucking deal its a 15,000 car enjoy it.

150K plus on mine and still drive it daily. With the price of gas... boost=10lbs and I let grandmothers pass me on the highway. :wink:

Cars are meant to be driven. Although I don't drive mine every day, it is driven a lot, sun/rain or whatever, and is driven at least 3-4 times per week. And I've even driven it in snow once in a GREAT while (snow tires mounted on stock rims) but I always keep the car clean and washed, top to bottom and underside. They are great daily drivers.

My car runs 11.70's on pump gas and alky and is a BLAST to drive on the street. Thumbs ups all the time and it gets a LOT of looks and compliments.

There is nothing wrong with using your TR for a D/D if that is what you want to do. Anything that breaks can be repaired and a good security setup as well as paying close attention to where you park the car will go a long way in thwarting thieves.

Enjoy your car. It wasn't built to sit in the garage. Your maximum enjoyment will be the drive itself plus all the attention the car gets when you're out and about, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.

PLUS - it's fun as hell to smack around the Mustang and Camaro boys. :biggrin:

2 years and ran great. I did not drive it in the winter unless needed. Good tires and 200 lbs of killty litter and I had no problems with traction.

I've used TR's for daily drivers since my first one 1994. I think they're a great daily driver.

With that said though, we bought a new 2005 Toyota Camry for my wife. We used it to go to BG last year, and then continued back East, down South and finally back out West here for a nice summer vacation. I must admit it was nice to have a car without squeaks, rattles and worries about it breaking while many miles from home. Plus not having to worry about it being stolen overnight while in a motel.

All in all, a new car is nice but won't replace the feeling of driving a GN.

FYI T-Types have the same "Bulge" on the hood as the GN's
