Trans Questions...

Hey, im new to these buick engines so im probably going to ask some pretty stupid questions. Well, I am trying to install an 1987 GN engine into my 1984 RX7. What i want to know is, what trasmission is most commonly used and what would be my best bet for a trans?

Also, i was wondering if anyone has done a manual trans swap. I really have my heart set on this engine, but i dont want an automatic transmission.

Thanks

To answer your question about trannys...The trans of choice is the TR/GN specific BRF 200-4R. It can be built to take a lot of abuse. Because of the nature of the turbo 3.8 SFI motor and how it builds tons of torque down low in the RPM band, and the relatively low redline, a standard tranny will not be the best choice for performance and cost efficiency. (Do a search on 5spd's, and you will get all the details and info on this subject)

Here is a link to a hybrid section where a few GN RX7 conversions are running around. They have a ton of info to share, and are great guys.

Welcome to the place for your answers and questions Buick. The reason the GN's were set up with the 200 4R is the gearing keeping the engine on the power band. You can't find a manual trans that will perform as well as this trans does. There are several members around that have converted to the GN set up and are very happy with their 200 4R's. Let's see how many of them respond to what you are asking. As far as fun to drive, a 200 4R can hit hard and so quick, you would only be mid gate by the time it was working on the next gear. what if i was to go with a stand alone engine management system? and some kind of twin turbo system? That would solve the problem with the t56 swap wouldnt it?

Hey, if you have the $$$ and time, anything is possible.
I don't know why you are so against using the automatic. Be careful not to make the comparison of how fun it was to drive ____ car that had a high redline, with a stick, and how that feeling would be nice in this setup. Two completely different beasts.
There are a bunch of guys out in B.C. that have well set up GN's and TR's, see if you can hook up with one of them for a ride... and I bet you will change your mind about the T56. ;)
