dumb question, but I keep hearing about these things on the board. What are they, and what do they do? I havn't bought a mas air flow sensor yet. should I look into a setup with these things and an LS1 sensor? treat me like I'm dumb, and explain please guys.

Well....here ya go...

The Translator comes in two flavors. Translator and Translator Plus. Their basic function is the "translate" the signal from a newer LT1 or LS1 MAF meter so the older computer in your GN/TType can read it.

There are some switches inside the box (approx 4"x6"x1") where you can adjust the fueling to a certain degree....e.g. richer or leaner idle (to get your idle BLM's in line) etc.

The Trans+ has an extra wire where you can adjust the timing, so no matter what ignition timing is programmed into the chip you're using, you can add or subtract BASE or WOT timing to suit the conditions.

The Extender chip works with the Translators to give you an "extended" MAF range. The stock MAF meter will max out at 255 gps (grams/sec) of air flow. When you modifiy your car and start cranking up the boost, most stock MAF's will max out and the computer looses it's control over the fuel mixture since from that point on, it doesn't really know how much air is coming it.

The Extender "extends" the MAF range to 510 gps (or doubles it). With the Extender chip in (looks like a regular chip) your MAF numbers as read on a scan tool will actually be 1/2 of normal.

The Extender has a bunch of other features, like being able to control open/closed loop at idle....anti-theft on/off....valet mode....torque converter lock-up speed....etc.

Basically you'll end up with a system where you can read your scantool and adjust whatever you need to get your car tuned in.

VERY COOL

The last chip you'll ever have to buy. No more race chip / street chip .... just flip a few knobs in the Trans+ and your set to go.

Search on this site...there was a post where I typed in every option available for the Extender chips. If you have any technical questions just ask.....or send a message to TurboBob (Bob Bailey). He's the inventor of this system.

Hope that helps,
John

it kind of sounds like the max effort chip. do both these things serve the same purpose? I like the idea of not having to replace o2 sensors with the max effort, but both these units scare me in the fact that they seem like you need a PHD to use them. with my combo, are these pieces gonna be necessary?

It's close to the MaxEffort, but not quite. The Trans/Extender combo is a little more street oriented. It does use the O2 sensor for open loop.

If you're worried about fouling an O2 sensor using race gas, you should try the new Denso "lead proof" O2 sensors. I recently bought one from Nick Micale at www.arizonagn.com. The word on the street is that even race gas won't foul these.

In reality, Bob Bailey has these Extender chips down to a Tee. I plugged mine in and it ran great (and I have the notorious 009's). Mine is programmed for 102 octane....for 93 pump gas I just turn a knob in the box to take the timing back to a 93 chip setting.....go to the track and turn up the timing and boost.

It sounds complicated, but the instructions are very complete. You can't really go wrong with it for a mostly street/occassionaly strip car.

If you want the most tunability for the track...the MaxEffort may fit the bill better. I don't have any experience with the ME, so you'll have to get other opinions on this, but from searching this board, you'll find that the guys that use the ME are very happy.

(Isn't it cool that we have so many options with a limited production car that was last made 15 years ago?!?!)

The simularities between a Translator Plus and ME, are different. <G>

They both allow for some timing and fuel changes.

The Translator allows for using the Later MAFs, and the ME uses the oem one or allows MAFless (I beleive Steve recommends this for off-road use).

Both now, allow for running without O2 sensors.

confused

I am wanting to get the extender, but I don't know what settings I should get. I went to OKTurbo's link and most of that was over my head. Things that were confusing were options like Y/W/Z and so on. I have a scanmaster 2.2. Could someone plase shed some light for me? I am confused!!!

Thanks,

OKTurbo,
You wrote that the Trans+ has one more wire then the Trans without the timing option. Is this the only difference? If it is, can I send my Trans to say Ramchargers and get it made into a Trans+?

Thanks,
Jason

I'm not sure if it's that easy to change a regular Translator box to the Trans Plus version....but....there is hope.

Ramchargers has a separate Timing box available for just such occassions. I'm not sure of the price, but Mike Licht posted a message on this board a month or so ago that described it.

This may be easier than changing the Trans to a Trans+.

Bob Bailey

Can someone tell me how to get a hold of Bob Bailey?

Any other suggestions for modifications of ECM?

Thank you
Larry
