I purchased an 84 t-type last november, So far the motor has been rebuilt, Turbo rebuilt, new injectors, new fuel pump, new wastegate, new exhaust, new hoses, new vaccum lines, new spark plug and wires, changed the fuel filter, new ignition system, and probably some more that I can't remember at the moment. I don't have a clue what is going on. The computer has been tested and seems to be in working order.

The problem with the car is it has a nasty backfiring whenever you load the car up and let off the gas. It's only during spirited driving. I don't know where else to go from here. I had a mechanic tell me that it could be the torque converter, another told me it could be in the electronic spark control. I just don't know where to go from here. I have spent so much money in trying to get this car running and it just keeps blowing up in my face.

An easy first thing to check is TPS adjustment. I had a friend that used to set his high on pupose because it made a nice fireball out the tailpipes when he let off the gas after driving hard.

You need a scantool to measure your numbers or you will chase your tail for ever.

Have any idea where to get a really cheap one? This car has broke me, and I haven't even got to sit and grin after I go full throttle.

Also, does the scan tool work with the Bonneville SSEi's? Well I guess it wouldn't since it would be obd II

You can get an OTC 2000 or 4000 scan tool, it handheld. Do a search on them or look on ebay they pretty cheap. I just picked one up cheap. Works on chryslers, fords, & GM's pre 1989. Depends on which cartridges and connectors you get with it. They are old and don't data log, but they are the cheapest you will find and serve their purpose. I am talking $50 or less, if you look good. Just a thought - Nick.

Hey thanks guys, I really appreciate it. I just placed a bid on a otc 2000. Wish me luck

Make sure you get everything you need to hook it up to the GM cars: Cartridge, aldl port hook-up, cig. lighter adapter, and a directions booklet is a plus. I just got one locally for dirt cheap. -Nick.

Thats the way to go, can't beat it for the money and it even works with stock hot air ECM's.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I just wish some of you guys lived closer to me, so I could get some much needed help LOL

I'm from Arkansas, and I know there are people around here that has these cars...but I never seem to get ahold of them.

Well I took my car over to a couple of great local guys and figured out the MAF that was installed was not working correctly. I got my hands on 2 and put one in tonight, and I still have a minor backfire. I only drove it for about 4-5 as it was dark. I just don't know what would be next. Gonna run back over to Mr. Matthews and see what he says.

Hey......give the ecm time to "learn" the new mafs you are putting on before you cancel them out as being bad. We have run across this several times. Someone would say their maf was bad and that they had replaced it with known good ones and it was still having problems. We would then put a maf off a well running car and stick it on and the car would still run rough....tell them to drive 30-50 miles and the car would clean up.....something about the 84/85 ecm's were slow to calibrate themselves......good luck to ya

I appreciate it, I'll get out tomorrow and drive it around.

I'd unplug the ECM power wire for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in so that the computer can "re-adjust" itself, then start the car and let it idle for a while before taking it out for a spin.

I'm not a huge experienced guy, I havent got the chance to drive my car enough lately, but that's the way I'd go. If some of the more experienced friends here see something wrong in my advice, PLEASE!! CORRECT ME!! I've learned a lot here and I really want to keep learning, plus It'll help out our friend here with his situation.

Thanks
