What is shotpeening?

I'm farming out most of my machining needs..... I am going to smoothen out all the edges and all the flash on my crank and piston rods with my grinder.

Does anyone out there know what shotpeening is? It's an additional cost on my rebuild that I must decide upon....

Just what it sounds like...they take your parts, put them in a container with a bunch of metal shot, and shake the whole mess around. The process is supposed to relieve surface stress, making cracks less likely to form and work hardening the surface slightly.
