I dont know of any TSE car at legal weight at an event that has run as fast as a TSM car at this point. The TSE guys dont seem to be pushing the envelope. Blocks dont make power thats for sure.

IMO, the block isn't the limiting factor, the turbo is. I don't know of any TSE cars with a GT style 76 turbo. They all have the "old school" 76. I wonder how far apart the airflow ratings of both turbos are. Years ago, we found that the 247 ci TSE cars were able to get close to 30 psi out of the 76 while the 274 ci engine could only get around 24. The turbo was more of an equalizer for the class (much like the PT-88 was for TSO). The extra head bolts aren't that great of an advantage when you can't turn the wick up real high and with the invention of head clamps.

Just my .02

Well I know for a fact Dave Bamford was making 900 or so HP at the flywheel when he ran the 9.57 @142mph pass with the PT70 GTQ and as far as I know the old school 3-bolt 76 turbo is rated at 900hp at the flywheel according to PTE so I guess you're right that the turbo is the limiting factor....... Wonder what the TSE boys could run with the new GT style 76 turbo?? Will they be allowed to run the new GT style 76 turbo or will they be stuck with the older 76 turbo??

There will be no changes in TSE for 2004. So you are in store for the same old same old.

That sucks! I wonder why they won't change the rules to allow the new GT style 76 turbo??

86Brick,

I guess I throw in my opinion which I'm sure will garner me some negative input. Basically the GSCA has had several classes (TSS and TSE) for the past 10 years whereby the rules are written to favor a certain individual who is very influential in the club. If he decides to start running turbos from Precision namely the 76 GTQ then the rules will chance to reflect it. Until then the configuration/ rules will stay the same.

You get the picture right?

Guess so, but doesn't Limit Engineering (John Craig) also sell a 76 GTQ?? I just can't understand why the GSCA wouldn't want a class of cars to get faster....... Makes absolutely no sense to me:confused: If that's the case and the rules won't change at least TSM will continue to be the most competitive and premier class for the Turbo Buick racing enthusiast! It's too bad Scott and Lonnie aren't in charge of making/changing the rules for the TSE class:(

86Brick,

To the best of my knowledge the 76GTQ is a Precision turbo creation. Can John Craig Build one? I don't see why not but I don't think he has yet. As far as TSM goes I think it's the most real world class there has ever been at the GS Nationals. The GSCA wasn't sold on the idea originally but TSM has proven itself to be the class to watch.

Yes John Craig builds one,i have a LT76 GTQ which he built for me this year.
I may sell it as it seems to be too big a turbo for my 231ci motor.
I have got a smaller exhaust housing for it and a new torque converter/transbrake so it should be fine now, but the season is finished up here so i will not be able to try it out untill spring.

If the 76-GTQ is built without a ported shroud compressor cover, then it is legal at Bowling Green. As such, the TSE guys just need to step up and "pay the man" for one of these new turbos. they can benefit from the new GTQ wheels just like some have in TSM.

In contrast to another earlier comment, the GSCA was never "against" TSM coming about. Actually, they were kinda pleased to see Lonnie put forth the origianl idea and they worked closely with Lonnie and I to finalize the rules. I would say, however, they seem to be kind of concerned/spooked by how fast the TSM cars have become! :D  :p

Well in that case those TSE guys definitely need to step up and pay the man for a 76 GTQ.........

It does seem that they are concerned/spooked by how fast the TSM cars have become especially after you read this thread on the GSCA BB........

Looks like they think this ported shroud compressor cover may help to cause more carnage to 109 block motors......
