Ive read about the precision TE-44's, with the .63 exhaust, and its got me a little confused. Last time I had my heat shield off, I wasnt really paying attention, but I think it said garrett on it. I do know it has a .63 though.
Its got a .60 compressor and a .63 exhaust.
So what is it? Is it a normal TE-44, or is it a precision? If .63 is standard, why do people always throw that up in their sig, when they describe thier TE-44? Is .63 not standard?

Anyone? I cant find this info anywhere on the net, so any help would be appreciated.

Can only speak from my own experience..I've got a TE-44 with the Precision .63 exhaust housing(was told it was done by limit engineering). I havent seen a 44 with the smaller Garrett .63 housing. Perhaps if it was built by someone other than Precision, they were able to use the Garrett ?? I dont think that the garrett housings arent made anymore and that "all" 44's or the like would come with Precision housings, whether they were made by them or not. Also, I would think that you could get the larger .82 or .83 housings for a 44 if you wanted ????

IMHO

:)

How can a .63 precision exhaust housing be bigger than a .63 Garrett one? Its just an area /radius measurement. Is there something about the precision one Im missing?

The wheels are what makes a 44 a 44. Nothing to do with the exhaust hosing. Mine originally came with a Garret .63. I have since put a PTE .63 on it to try and get a little more top end. Still a 44. I could go and put a .85 PTE housing on there... Still would be a 44.

The .63's are the same size A/R, just a different shape.

.63 A/R Housing

Sorry to do this to you when you seem like you have got it figured out but, be careful when talking about .63 turbine housings. A Garrett .63 and a Precision .63 have differnent flow characteristics. I don't have first hand experience with a Precision, but numerous posts I have read about the subject claims that PRECISION .63s are really more like a .75. What this does is give you a little more flow top end but makes it harder to spool with a stock converter. So if you want the top end use a Precision if you have a tight converter go with the Garrett. :o Either way you slice it the turbo is a TE-44, because of the wheels like Bens87 stated.

I have a Precision 63 on a TE-44, the lag is terrible. But when it finally spools..........whoooweeeeee!:D

Thanks
I have a 3800 stall, so thats not an issue, although lag is an issue. For some reason, in the past couple weeks, something has gone wrong. Lag has become horrible. It would spool up like crazy. One day everything fell apart, and I havent been able to fix it.
I can spin the compressor wheel by hand, and it spins freely. But, if I put any upward or forward force on it and try to turn it, it binds up.
I put my alky on this weekend, and brought the boost up to 17-18. It pulls great, but the lag is really bad. Im also trying to figure out why I have a degree or so of KR at only 18psi. My O2's are low 800's.

You shouldnt have any KR if you are running 91 octane.

I have 91 and alky w/ 50lb injectors on a TE45 and can run 25psi w/ zero KR.

Maybe you are running out of fuel?...but the alky would make up for it...hmmm..I dunno? *shrugs*

When is the KR? If its when you shift dont worry about it.

I think I had some knock as a result of too much fuel. Through some tuning, I was able to eliminate this. I turn the alky dial to 5, and run 17psi, and get no knock. On the occasion that I do, its maybe half a degree. Ive pulled spool fuel down to 4% lean, and WOT low gear fuel to 4% rich. It seems to be working pretty well. Im not going to increase boost further until I get my fuel pump and hotwire in.
How do you like the TE-45? My turbo isnt in the best condition, (chipped plating on 1 fin and the wheel binds if I put sideways force on it while turning it [impellar isnt hitting the housing]) and I dont know whether to rebuild mine with new bearings and a compressor wheel, or just get a new or rebuilt turbo. I want fast spool, and since Im going to be putting a D-5 converter back in, I need something that can spool fast enough to handle the lack of stall. But I want to be able to run mid to low 11's eventually. Im sure it has the capability now, as this car is really cookin now, even with the low boost. Those ported heads and cam really help. I really need to get an exhaust system. Ive still got a completely stock system, with a really small generic cat on there. I cant imagine how much power is being held back by that.

If you are putting the stock D5 on there, then I would semi-consider a TE45, but theres MUCH better suited turbos to use for that D5.

Seriously, it pulls like a mother f*cking freight train. The car at 20psi feels like it wants to lift the front off the ground.

Ok hows this, I beat a WRX the other day while completely spinning through 2nd and into 3rd(my friend was the one who told me I was spinning, I was too bust watching for KR).

After I fix some stuff on my car, I wanna get that LT1 trans+ you have, and some ported stock heads. Basically kinda the setup you have.

Dont get an exhaust, just get a 3"THDP w/ a dump pipe.

This car is frustrating. I jumped on it a couple times this morning, and the damn thing felt like a dog. One day it will feel like a frieght train like you said, and other days it feels like a honda.
One thing I noticed is that it actually pulls harder at 2/3rds to 3/4 throttle than full throttle. Alot harder. I think my exhaust is really plugging things up. I have a ton of crap for bringing the air in, and nothing to get it out.
1st gear always feels like a beast, but 2nd and 3rd are pretty flat.
So what did the THDP do for you? How the hell are you tearing the tires up in 2nd and 3rd? I have roughly a 4000 stall, and cant manage that. I spin through first, but not hard. It hooks pretty well actually. Maybe its just the tires.

The restrictive factory exhaust is choking your car and robbing you of hp. You'll see a nice gain with the TH downpipe and dump if everything is tuned properly. If cruising around with the cutout open gets a little too loud you might want to look into a Hooker or ATR catback.

The 3"dp w/ cutout closed, allowed the turbo a little more topend it seemed, since it wasnt so restrictive. It also gave a slightly garglier sound.

With it open, the turbo spools incredibly fast, and the car has an insane mid-top now. It actually seemed faster in the top end than the bottom end.

Get the 3"dp w/ the cutout. Its not INCREDIBLY loud, but it gets ya looked at. Yesterday I went to the BMW dealership, and literally, every single person in the low looked at my car on the way in, and the salesmen were talking about "yea we got fast cars, but then theres this(reffering to my car).

I would prolly get this pipe even if it did nothing, just for the sound hahahahah
