Ok, my dad has agreed to buy me a set of shocks for the TR for my birthday. He said the limit is $350 for all four. I'm thinking Bilsteins, but is there something maybe a little better out there, or should I go with the Bilsteins? I'm not gonna be a regular at the drag strip and I'm not looking for something that will win an autocross event, just something that gives a better ride than stock and gets the job done!

TomTom,

Nobody has anything but good to report on Bilsteins.
I've used them since the mid-70's...super shocks, for sure.

All that being true, you can still consider a set of Tokicos. I use them now, and I do recommend them highly.

It's like amps...nobody "needs" 500 watts, but that's what they "want".

Tokicos aren't much more expensive than Bilsteins, so it's just another choice to make.

Compare prices at www.shox.com before you buy.

You'll be very happy with either.

I went with the KYB's from PST. They were $119 shipped to my doorstep.
Tell your dad to get you those and some other goodies. :D
They also come with a lifetime warranty.

Shocks

I needed shocks for our cars. The Bilsteins are nice shocks but pricey. I ended buying the KYBs for both cars and am very pleased with the ride and handling. I cannot imagine the ride of the Bilsteins being worth three times the price. PST 119.00 to the front door.:)

I don't think he's on a budget his Dad has a $350 spending limit on the shocks. IMO Bilsteins are the best its around $55-65/ea.

Based on feedback from some TTA people, the new KYB AGX's are at least as good as the Bilsteins and most said better. Plus they are fully adjustable.
Not sure if they became available on G-boides yet.

But... you can't go wrong with KYB's for $119 from PST. I think most people don't really need a shock better than that.

I agree - spend the other money on good stuff - K&N air filter, adjustable FPR, better fuel pump, RJC powerplate, etc...

I am very satisfied with my KYB's, they work fine and I doubt you could even tell a difference between most the shocks out there. Get the KYB's and spend the money where it counts----> the engine :D

I bought my ride with KYB's installed, love the handling.

Anyone have adjustables? im curious to how they work, can you change ride hight and stiffness?

Adjustables just allow you to change the damping rate of the shock. You can set them to firm or soft. No ride height change.

What place is PST, and are you saying that a set of 4 is only $119? If so can someone give me a link.

I'm using HAL 12 way adjustable shocks in my GN. They're awesome! They're also expensive, but for what I do with the car it's worth it.

Bilsteins are just plain awesome. got a full set from autozone for a little over 200 bucks i believe. i had some GM goodwrench crappy shocks on the back, you could pull em out and push em in with one finger. they were shot. the fronts were better, but still bad. i put ont he bilsteins, and now after a few weeks, the handling is better than it was when i first installed em, the height setllled down, and it handles GREAT. i cant believe it. before i used to scrape driveways, now i dont, before on bumps, the car would bounce and bounce, and continue to bounce, now it doesnt bounce at all, just goes, bump bump, then rides smooth. reduced my squeaks and rattles too. they are really worth the money. I am still in high school, and there are plenty of other things i could have spent my hard earned money on, like airbags, slicks, more high performance stuff for the motor, seats, etc. but i believe that the bilstiens were a better investment than any of those things i could have done. just made the car more enjoyable, and fun to drive.

Greetings All,

I've had KYB's and Bilsteins on the same car (I don't recall the exact model of KYB, but it was their top-of-the-line gas shock for the G-body circa 1994-1995, so maybe this data's not current.)

While I had the KYB's on the car, I thought they were an excellent shock, but then I switched to the Bilsteins in '95-'96, and found these to be considerably better. The most apparent differences were that the Bilsteins rode with less harshness and "jiggliness," yet had higher dampening force at both the front and rear of the car. In a nutshell: firm and very well controlled, yet comfortable. For something like $200(?) $240(?) for the full set, I've had no regrets with the Bilsteins.
