One of the first mods always suggested was a 160 thermostat to run the engine cooler. Think the stocker was 185. Modern engines are running much hotter and still make some amazing hp. What's the thoughts on this? Alky injection really cools the intake charge down so can we run the engine hotter and still make higher hp? I know one of the reasons to run the engine hotter is to evaporate the water out of the block which doesn't happen if it's run too cool.

I switched back to a 180deg T stat (which is what these TR’s came with from the factory ). Engine coolant temps were too low for my liking . Also had the chip re-programmed to come on higher (at 188deg F)
Was only getting in the mid 150’s in the morning , which is not warm enough to boil off any condensation or even have engine parts warmed up enough to let er rip
Of course mine is a street driver & doesn’t see the track

I always thought stock was 195 for emissions & efficiency.. I run 180 in the tr as a compromise would never run a 160 myself especially being a street car in new england, stock location intercooler & tight 2500ish torque converter, lots that goes into it.. maybe 160 is better for racing idk.. did alot of reading years ago very interesting especially the posts from the late username bruce, lots of talk of heat is power.. that's where ceramic coatings on exhaust can benefit keeping the heat contained and moving along.. I run a 180 in my tr & stock 195 in my 01 gs would rather cool the charge air via intercooler than mess with buicks engineering if I can help it, i do run 4oz of royal purple ice to a gallon of 50/50 mix coolant & synthetic fluids to help keep things marginally cooler.. Wonder if you should run thinner oil with a cooler stat? Interestingly the 2003 buick regal gsx built by slp ran a 180 tstat & that car was still warranted by buick same as any other car so who knows gotta read read read
