This Saturday I have 5 hours to burn in LA with my wife. I've been there once just driving thru one evening..went thru Beverly Hills and the Sunset Strip and that was about it, we did see the "OJ Tour" cause I was with a coworker gal that was into that and it was just a few months after the murder stuff so that was all I saw.
Going to go look at a car in Covina then we have about 5 hours before we have to return to the airport...we'll have a rental car..she wants to see the LA Beaches so I guess we'll drive around Redondo up to maybe the Malibu area if we have time...probably swing by the Sunset Strip and that area on the way as I'm sure my wife will want to go by there.

Any other idea?

Head up PCH north towards the Malibu/Ventura county line and enjoy a few frosties at Neptune's Net. Surfers across the street, varied and cool biker/surfer crowd, excellent seafood "dive" joint. I've wasted many a pleasurable afternoon on the front porch watching rides/people come and go...

That sounds like a cool place to blow some time and grab some grub.
Is it on PCH somewhere between where Sunset Blvd crosses PCH and Malibu? Probably don't have enough time to drive much past Malibu.

I arrive at 9am...depart at 5:20pm..so I need to be back at LAX by 4pm and I figure on 2 hrs to get to Covina and checkout the car.... my take the scenic route and go south along the beaches to Long Beach and then dart up I-605 to I10...then from Covina go west and go thru Hollywood area and Beverly Hills and then over to the PCH/Malibu before heading back to the airport.

I believe it is just north of there...it is in malibu right before the Ventura line. If you're hell bent on Long Beach then you may be hard pressed to get back up to Malibu in time.

LAX to LB is about 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. LAX to Neptune's Net is about an hour. Rental car return to the airport location is pretty easy.

If in Long Beach, go to West Coast Choppers if you're into what Jesse James builds - beautiful art deco building his personal shop is in with the original shop right across the street. His own food joint (Cisco Burger) is right there too.

Hey Rob -

If you rent a cool ride, try to get to Mulholland Drive. It's a great drive - lots of twists & turns - you'll wish you had your TTA with ya....
(it is a famous road - you will recognize it from many movies)

Or just cruise - anywhere in that area is fun - checking out the people and their cars!

Damn I really wish we had the entire w/e but my schedule is completely packed to stay any longer....guess we'll get an idea and maybe come back on a relaxing drive around vacation sometime...

I Googled that place, yeah, its probably too far north for us to get to with time to spare...hopefully traffic is not too bad at 9-10am to cruise around the south part on the way to circle back to Covina...guess I'll just play by ear when I get there....looks like Venice Beach would be a fairly easy jog to the airport so we may end there and spend whatever time is left.

Fastest place I have ever been. 115mph on the Interstate and still had people passing!

A ton of wrecking yards off interstate 5 headed north. Several good G-Bodies to choose from. Could easily burn 5 hours, searching through row upon row of cars...!;)

i visited cali, and loved pacific coast highway, beautiful views everywhere, i use to believe florida had CALIFORNIA lick'd  , man was i wrong, california is just awsome

At least your wife wants to go with you. I flew to Cali to get my TTA and the wife coulda cared less. Then again 2000 miles and 2 1/2 days to drive back....she made the right call.

My wife enjoys going on road trips...this time is required as the car we are buying is for her daughter :) 87 Mercedes SL. I bought my TTA in Escondido, CA and she went and rode back..we pit stoped in Palm Springs and stayed with her friends there. We also bought a '79 TA in LA.. that drive was not so much fun for her...car had no radio and the radiator was leaking...
This time I'm having the car shipped back so no drive home this time...just don't have the time to take a leisure drive back :(

Man, a road trip in a SL would be great, especially this time of year.

Congrats on the latest car addition, Rob!

Mine was not a leisure trip, (after 4hrs of delays)arrived in San Diego @11:00pm Cali time on Friday nite than drove to Metairie Louisiana, right at 2000 miles, arrived in Metaire at 6:30 Sunday afternoon. PS Had bad tires were cracking up for the last 120 miles as well as going thru Arizona with NO t-top shades in 116 degree heat:mad: . So yes the next time I get a bright idea to buy a car on Ebay it will be shipped!!

Get to LAX around 3:30...
To be safe
