Weigh in if you guys would: I have an 87 Regal "T" with 61 K and have zero issues except one !

Go VERY SLOW, (or back up) VERY SLOWLY and what I THINK is the rear end "bunches up" ... The best way I can explain it is it sounds / feels like I'm crushing ice as I drive over same.

Note this only happens at near dead stop speeds .... S L O W

NO issues whatsoever exist (rear end wise) I changed the fluid a year ago, *adding 2 bottles of friction modifier (the limited slip stuff) AND it won't always act up !

"Annoying a good word" ... " I'd swear it's in the rear end" ! ... *the drive-shafts greased / great ! can anyone think of anything else (the tires of course are all a-like) that this could be ?

Thoughts ? (thanks).

If it is happening with the wheels turned it sounds like you need to replace the fluid again. Make sure you are going straight and check for the BINDING noise that I think you are describing. If it is worse or more pronounced when you turn the wheel the clutch packs are sticking and you will have to change the fluid again and use a quality L/S fluid as well as gear oil.

Thank-you BOTH ... "I'll try an pin it down soon". *I never considered Brakes, but would again swear it's in the rear end .... IT DOES IT MORE in a light turn robz, YOU could be on too something.

Your welcome, I've seen that problem more than once in the 30 plus years of working on cars. It is common to think it's the brakes binding because of the clunking sound/feel that makes it seem like the shoes are binding but in reality it's the axle transferring the shock to the wheels.

It's easy enough to check the brakes to see if they are adjusted properly and don't have brake fluid on them from a bad wheel cylinder, if they check out okay you will know that the fluid needs to be changed in the rear.

If it binds more in a tight turn at really low speeds that would be a dead give away that the posi additive is shot or your fluid could even be low in the rear. I would check the fluid level before driving it again so you don't damage the R/P gears and bearings.

Report back what you find so others that come across this problem can find the possible solution.
