What is everyone's opinion?

For me, if it can be driven for 100 miles or more leagally on the street, its a street car.
Some cars may have more comforts such as od, ac, heat....but remember cars from 40 years ago did not always have all 3 of those either and they got driven cross county on family vacations all the time.

You will never get an answer on this. It is all in the eye of the beholder...

I think that when a car starts to get HP levels above 600hp on a street car we start to question the purpose of that car,I think a stage II car, 80mm turbo, big cam, huge external pump ringing in your ear,no ac/ heat, cages is no longer really a street car , I guess it's cool to drive around a 9 sec car on the street but really think about it? How cool would it be to drive a 10.80 -11.0 car on the street ac blasting , go anywhere ? I know I will get flamed for this but there is always going to be the fight my car runs 4s on the street and gets 30 MPG, with the ac on

I just like to see everyone's opinion on it

When you need a cage to go to 7-11 to buy a lotto ticket.

At the same time, a car running mid 10's and faster at the track without a bar is stupid imo. Look at OC's roll over at BG. The car was not even at the 1/8th yet but the cage saved his life.

I don't think a car has to be practical to be a street car. Not like it has to be driven everyday to work to earn it's title.

This is the car in question on another site:

Guy drove it 1000 miles then busted off 6 second times!

I should have read the post better;)

There are many differences in the Street Machine world. My 409 car runs 10.60's spinning the hard rubber Mickey Thompsons the entire 1320 feet. That is at 10% underdriven ( roughly 650 horse) if I flip the pulleys over and go 10% overdriven, it is roughly 780 horse, a 20% increase in power. What would it run??? Never even tried it yet. It drives all day in 80-90 degree heat at 160-170 degrees. I put about 2500 miles on it in primer before I painted it for this reason. I didnt want to have to change anything after it was painted. I have a buddy with a 70 Nova 468 iron block and Bowtie heads, 2 fogger NOS and 2 dominators carbs. It has been high 8's and was driven to the track and home. In the world of "Fastest street cars" the rule for racing is, they have to complete a 50 mile cruise in order to compete without overheating or other trouble. I think this is still a rule. I havent done much with these kinda cars in 10 years or so.
I also had a guy with a 63 Pontiac Tempest CONVERTABLE that went 7.99 and was driven all the time.

Thanks
Coach

I agree. What one calls a "race car" or a "track car" another might say "Blah...hell I drive that to work every day". Same almost applies to engines.

Me personally, when the car is caged, has a chute on the rear, is tubbed with big slicks, no creature comforts, has a camshaft that requires at least a 4000 rpm stall and a 4.56 gear on a 1.00:1 final transmission gear ratio, open headers and has to use at least 100 octane.....is certainly to me not a street car...though someone else might use such car to drive thru Mc Donalds...though they would have to shut down the engine just to make their order. :D

Change the stall to 4200 and the gears to 4.86's and you have my 409...LOL and yes you used to have to shut it off at the bank drive-in or Burger King. It is enjoyable to drive though. You want to see rubber-necking, everyone looks, like it or not, when I drive it. I just cut out the floors at add the largest R.V. mufflers that Flowmaster makes to quiet it up.
You are correct. No one will ever agree. My thoughts on what is streetable are ,if it doesnt heat up driving it...drive it.

Thanks
Coach
A few of my 09'. I have owned it for 23 years.

As soon as the license plate and insurance comes off. Any car is streetable if you can tolerate it ...

Kevin, if you want to see street cars in the TR world I have three letters for you THS.:):)

See ya, Kip

well let me ask everyone how many miles they put on there car a year ??

Ya. we have a cage in Melissa and Russ's GN and also in my Mazda. Sorry .. not goin to run 9's or 10s without a bar. Plus up here ya won't get away running 10s without one. Her car starts right up with the touch of a key.. idles nice. anyone could jump in the car and drive it . Open the hood and ya don't see much.. Not a lot of "cool guy" parts that you can see. AC works . Car is driven everyday in the summer. Car is USED !!! no garage queen here :p

Coach that's a cool Impala you have there....looks like it's wearing a late 80's high impact color theme?

Thanks. It is a 62'Biscayne. Actually it was just painted in 2002. It is Orbit Orange with Orange pearl coat. Looks yellow in the photo. It was black with graphics in the 80-90's.

The 09' has about 30,000 on it in 23 years. 3 different engines. Original is put away, 2nd went "KA-BOOM", and this one has about 2000.

My GN was a 16,000 mile original in 2007, now has 21,000.
My Max Wedge is newly rebuilt. No miles last year, but 42,000 since 1993.
Last summer my dad got my 73 Charger out of storage after 25 years put away. Put 1800 miles on it. Now has 51,000 total. Family owned since 1976.

Thanks

IMO, anything with a cage!

Actually adding any safety equiptment (a cage) is a good thing these days to protect you from everyone else cell phoning, texting, etc! But taking anything away such as lights, wipers, bumpers, door beams, proper brakes, etc. means track car. How quick a car is is not as much a factor as its drivability, a 9 second car on the street... cool unless you launch into whos in front of you, but there are 9 second and quicker cars that have good manners too, wonderfull time we live in that we have come that far , then of course the biggest factor of streetability the driver!

I agree 100%...Also one other thing that rules out a true "street car" to me at least, are cars that are "tubbed". Here where I live, tubbed cars are frowned upon by the authorities... You can drive one, but watch out if a cop pulls you over and has you to go to the inspection...then, you're done, the fun's over. :(

Claude.

The ole street car vs. raccar debate.

Never ending saga amongest street racers and such.

We just make jokes about it around here. Funny I had my door panels off for several months while getting the interior done and guys jokingly would yell RACECAR since I had no door panels.

Me personally I say a race car or youve gone over the line when it cant be driven on a 3 hour or more drive on the interstate maintaining highway speeds in rain or shine and can handle bumper to bumper in the summer as well.

It can have a cage, no heat or ac, non L/U, 1 seat, manual steering, gutted back half, etc just the above/ applies IMO.

Wonder how many 400 swap turbo regals have driven, say 3 plus hours to BG through the mountains for example? Maybe a few but IMO the line has been crossed..FREAKIN RACECAR...HA

I would think that a street car is a passenger vehicle. When you modify the interior and limit the number of passengers (examples: 4 to 2,
4 to 1, 2 to 1), the car becomes a race car.

when is a street car a street car

this arguement will never end, i've seen video of larrys l. car before impressive as it may be i just can't see how practical a full cage, manual steering, a lenco tranny in city traffic and so much horsepower that you have to map quest every gas station from point a to point b, just my 2 cents
