You are correct.. sort of.. It was standard on GN's that were the late build cars. The ones built after august 87. Mine was in oct and has a standard posi.. before that it was an option...

Didn't posi become standard during mid year production of the 87 Grand Nationals? I have a build date of 6/87 and my car did not come with Posi.

actually the posi was a part of the GN package on the late builds.. You did not have to pay extra for it.. BUT the Gn package was more expensive then in the early cars so I guess it was not free :)

Technically it was always an option - even on the late-87s. The late-87s did have a bunch of "options" that weren't really optional (I guess GM was trying to use up their supply of optional parts) but technically they were still options and appeared as such on the window sticker.

correct. Posi had cast iron drums.. At least on 87 GN's. T's had alum with posi I believe..

WOW I didn't know that!!!! So the reason mine has aluminum drums is because it was originally a peg legger??

so what we see isn't necessarily what we get...n/c G80, iron brake drums, alum bumper supports on my '86........guess GM just did what they did

WOW, someone who actually knows!!!!!!!!!!

Correct, The GNX RPO T2L automatically mandated G80

No GNX's were made without Posi...All the GNX's had the same options, and G80 was one of them. Each GNX has a certain Special 'Code' on the RPO label. The Code was 'T2L'....In order to have that T2L code the car had to have Posi rear amoung other GNX options.

Is anyone aware of any exceptions to the following:

1986:

All GNs and all Ts had aluminum front and rear bumper reinforcements
Some GNs and some Ts had limited slip, some did not
All GNs and Ts with limited slip had cast iron rear brake drums
All GNs and Ts without limited slip had aluminum rear brake drums

1987:

All GNs had steel front and rear bumper reinforcements
All Ts had aluminum front and rear bumper reinforcements
Some GNs and some Ts had limited slip, some did not
All GNs and Ts with limited slip had cast iron rear brake drums
All GNs and Ts without limited slip had aluminum rear brake drums

-and-

All extended build GNs (8/3/87 on) had limited slip ("required option")

-and-

All GNXs had aluminum front and rear bumper reinforcements, limited slip and aluminum brake drums

Both 1986 and 1987:

Excepting GNX (T2L), what these cars were called (GN, Base Regal, Regal, Regal Limited, T, T Type, Turbo T, WE2, WE4, whatever) and how they were packaged varied year-to-year, and within the model year.

Wow
I didn’t know this I thought all GN’s came with posi. I have a 84 and it has a posi rear end in it. I love laying down two long back lines. === I think my car might have been a FBI or police car because it has one key that opens the doors, trunk, and starts the engine. Does anyone know if GN’s were FBI cars? I have heard stories but I am not sure.

Everytime I've asked about the FBI cars, I've been assured that they did buy many of them....the exact number has always been in question, though. I've heard estimates around 75-100, but that seems a little far-fetched to me.

There's an article on an FBI GN in one of the Buick fact books. One of the more interesting options on those cars was a 145 mph analog speedo instead of the 85 mph one. Can't remember all the other differences offhand. I'll have to dig up that book around here.

why would the cops want one key instead of two? That makes no sense. Which key works everthing on your car? round or square one? My guess is that the round does.. and the ignition is so worn that the round one starts the car but is not sopossed to..
