Like the title says where other than the junk yards I have searched for a 4.1 block casting 291 crack free??

Probably should post this in the parts wanted area. You'll get best results there. ;)

Lotta folks that have them, are holding on to them.
Be prepared to pay some $$.

You might want to broaden your expectations a little. IIRC in another thread you wanted crack free and no machine work needed or something like that. Hey you're going to have to clean them up. You're going to want to do all of the machine work. Aint no such as a free dog as the saying goes.

I have some blocks. But they have a little rust in the bores from blown HGs and they are dirtier than all heck.Nothing that an over bore wouldn't clean up IMO. I can clean the decks and see if there are cracks visable to the naked eye. But I will not send them to be cleaned and sonic checked just to have somebody low ball or play games on the price. My time is worth more money than the parts in other words. That is what stops me from selling them. Been there and done that. While I agree that you dont want to end up with a piece of junk, on the other hand I dont want to knowingly sell you a piece of junk. Sorry for the rant.

Yes I know it will need to be machined, I'm just looking for a good usable 4.1 block cast #291 and I don't want to waste my time either. sorry for any confusion

walk around a few junkyards and pop the hoods of early 80's LeSabres... i'm sure you'll find a few low mileage granny driven cars with the motors still there, and if you can convince the yard owner that it's "just another 231", you could probably get the whole motor pretty cheap.
if i'm not mistaken (and i very well could be) a sure fire way to tell a stock 4.1 from a 231 of the same year (if the emissions decal is missing for some reason)is to look for the 4 barrel quadrajet carb instead of the 2 barrel "half a quadrajet" the 231's got.

Motors are all the same price in the self service yards. You'd be hard pressed to find a 20-30 YO car in a full service yard. And that's part of the problem. If you find a 4.1 in the boneyard you can pretty much be guaranteed that it was rode hard and put up wet.

The easy way to ID a 4.1(or any V-6) is to look at the drivers side of the block. Crawl under the car. It has 3.8 or 4.1 cast into the block along with the 7 or 8 digit casting number. You dont even need to get dirty on a 4.1. Just look for the ribs on the front of the block above the front cover. If it's a 109 you are looking for, peek into the drivers side wheelhouse and look for the drain plugs right by the motor mount. And yes all 4.1s came from the factory with Quadrajets.

i know of one junkyard that has hundreds of 20-30 year old cars just waiting to donate parts. and they know what they have, and will pull things like motors for only a little extra on top of the price for the motor. it is a great place to just go walk around on a saturday afternoon- what's better than 100+ acres of well organized cars from the 20's to the current model year?- and i wish i still lived 4 miles away from it instead of 130 miles away.
