I need to know what size stall speed that I need for my tranny...my tranny is undecided right now but what stall speed should I get if my cam specifications are:

*Advertised duration: 266 intake/266 exhaust
* Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 210 intake/210 exhaust
* Gross valve lift: .440 in. intake/.440 in. exhaust
* Lobe separation: 110 degrees
* RPM range: 1,600 to 4,600
* 8.5 to 10: 1 compression ratio recommended

what would you recomend? I was thinking a 2,300-2,500? But what are your thoughts

If this is a turbo regal with a 200r4 tranny that stall is to low, I would think especially with the cam. Matter of fact that is lower than stock stall on these cars! HTH:) I am in the process of installing a th350 in my TR and you can see the mods below with a stock cam.....it will have a 3000 stall:D

No this is not for a buick regal. Its for my Monte. The stall speed stock on mine are around 1,600 I think...so what do you think I should go with? I am putting out around 220-240hp and 300-315 torque if these figures help at all.

Thanks alot. Anyone else have any comments, concers, recommendations or views on what stall speed..

Correction, I ran my engine specs through my desktop dyno and the results were 204hp@4000RPM and 312ft-lbs@2000RPM So does that change what stall I should be running?

Thanks

This may help to better explain my situation. I think stock speed is around 1,600 so I was thinking atleast 2,200 but you recomended a maximum of that. You are the expert but I just wonder what you think now. If I got the 18-2,200 like you said I will have almost no HP at launch which would be bad? So would you agree on 2,500-2,700? or still 1,800-2,200?

RPM Power Torque
2000 RPM 118 312
2500 RPM 144 303
3000 RPM 174 305
3500 RPM 198 298
4000 RPM 204 272
4500 RPM 198 231
5000 RPM 179 188
5500 RPM 152 145

THANKS ALOT!

I can see that...right now my stall speed is 1,600 so I would be making a little less than what I am making at 2000. And I am launching like sh*t at 1,600 so hp must play a role too which is what I was thinking. Why not go close to 3,000RPM Stall and launch with an extra 56hp off the line and sacrafice a measly 7ft-lbs? Honestly don't think I am trying to be smart I just want to understand...help explain your view to me.

.look at the graph again .if you use what isaid the car will leave with 604 foot lbs as the convertor will double what is at the flywheel and then the engines ability to gain rpm will accelerate the car .if you leave at a higher rpm you WILL HAVE NO USABLE RPM RANGE AND WILL SEVERELY LIMIT THE VEHICLES ABILITY TO ACCELERATE AS LEAVING AT MAXIMUM HPOWER WILL MAKE THE CAR SIT ON ITS BALLS AND NOT GO ANYWHERE.AS SOON AS YOU LET OFF THE BRAKE AND PUNCH THE GAS THERE WILL BE A TOTAL LOSS OF VACCUM AND IF ITS CARBUERATED THE ENGINE WILL RUN OUT OF AIR AND NOT RPM .TORQUE IS KING IN A STREET CAR ESPECIAALY WITH THE OIL CRISIS (IE LETS NOT POUR GAS OUT THE TAILPIPE BUT USE IT TO EFFICIENTLY MOVE THE CAR AROUND .)SORRY IF THIS IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE BUT IF IT IS GIVE US ACALL .7186264315 WWW.CKPERFORMANCE.COM

No no no... That was just perfect, I get it perfectly now thanks for taking the time to explain to a tranny noob about the mechanics of a high stall converter and a tranny. I fully understand what you said and am planning to buy B&M's "Holeshot 2000". by the way would this be a good choice...as far as price and quality goes? The next size up is the "Holeshot 2400". Sucks that there is no 2,200. Do you know what brand carries 2,200 torque coverters? or should I just go with the 2000 of the 2400...Sorry i really wan to get this right the first time.

we can build a convertor for you that will give you the desired stall speed as well as deliver added durability and performance .just call chris at ck performance.com at 718 626 4315 .also i am grateful that my info was helpful and comprehensible as in the arena of auto parts the buying public has been fooled by product misinformation and myths on a regular basis,resulting in wasted money ,and cars that dont perform up to their full potential .www.ckperformance.com

why would you pay good money for a lower stall convertor when you get a used D5 Buick GN 12" 2400 stall lockup convertor for about $50 from anyone off of this board? THey have been in the low 11's and 10's without problems and have lockup for better mileage or lower et's :).

That is what I would do.

why would you put dirty underware on after taking a shower ?if the guy just built a motor and a trans or better yet bought them i think he owes it to the person who sold him the rebuilt trans to put in a rebuilt convertor .after all we are responsible for warrantying what we sell .,and a used beater is a loser when installed on a rebuilt trans ,not just for the customer but for those responsible for the warranty period also. i do agree with you that the d5 is a good piece ,you wont get any lip from me there.www.ckperformance.com

I like the way you explain things Chris! Thats a good comparison and a good reason to avoid a used converter.

Nah, Im about 90 miles from Chicago, Im sure you remember me, we had MANY phone conversations. Remember the servo spring you kept trying to send me and it kept coming back to you? You also told me about all the weird people in NYC too!:D Enjoying the snow??
