I see a lot of down pipes for sale with an external waste gate set up.

Is an external better than internal?

Is it worth the conversion?

How does one do the conversion?

Thanks!

Post 10's - internal
Pre-10's - external

I think with the new technology either work just fine in any application.

The downpipe will have a pipe that reroutes the exhaust to the EXWG, then that dumps the exhaust to the exhaust stream in the down pipe post turbo. Sometimes they dump right to atmosphere.

So for 10's in the 1/4 and higher run an internal waste gate and 9's and lower go external?

I would look at it like this, until the internal starts giving you issues stick with it, it's cheaper and gets the job done. ;) BTW, internals for the DSM cars are not as good as ours.

But External Gate is better assuming both are functioning properly.

Well doctor, the truth is I'm in market for a replacement down pipe and want to go bigger than stock. I see a lot of external waste gate down pipes out there.

You won't regret the choice, if you plan on going faster and want better boost control, the aftermarket boost controllers (AMS, Innovative) work better with aftermarket wastegates. If you go with one, the Tial products are great.

If you can budget for it, go external. Like a few others have said they tend to give a more consistent boost control than internal. Not to mention rerouting exhaust gas before it gets to the turbo rather than to it but skipping the exducer will keep it running cooler (although it can be debated by how much).

I definatley agree with Ted on this one. I use a Tial 38mm gate that was a direct fit on my ATR downpipe. I use the boost controlling feature in the MAF PRO (which I doubt is near the tech of an AMS or innovative) and the boost control is rock solid. It is much better than any internal gate I've ever used.

Saying you have to be in the 10's to use one doesn't make any sense.

So what all mods have to be done to properly convert from internal to external?

Basically just a downpipe and a wastegate. You can make a cheap boost controller with parts from any hardware store.

Ok, so basically I could remove the stock down pipe and install a bigger down pipe with an external wastegate on the same turbo?

Also would an external wastegate get in the way of any of the underhood components?

Turbo shield won't fit without notching it. Other than that, it should all fit.

This shield will fit without ANY alterations.

Hey, I keep hearing about a "boost controller", pardon me what what are you referring to?

Also how much? How does it work?
