I just changed my spark plugs and noticed that the ends of them were white, not black. I pluged in my DS and ran it down the road. A lot of the time my car is running lean, but at WOT my 02 volts are around 880. I have alky injection and was wondering if this could cause my spark plugs to be white. My car is set at 20#s of boost, and I only get knock when my tires are spinning and my car shifts into 2nd.

Thanks
Chris

I noticed the same thing on the plugs in my GN. Mostly stock car with alky. and no KR that I've seen.

O2's in the 825 region.

Not sure what it is.

Interesting.

My plugs are the same color and I do NOT have alcohol injection. I would be curious to see what you guys find out.

I asked one of my friends who use to be a mechanic and he said that my plugs looked like my engine was running too lean and that the white on the plugs were from the cylinder temparture being too hot.

Chris

If the cylinder temp was too hot or you were running lean then the O2s would be to low. My O2s are around 800, right where they should be for the street.

5.0 this, if your O2s are 880 then your way too rich.

IMHO the plugs should be a light tan if the car is running perfect.

Can anyone else shead any light on this?

plugs should be brown to grayish tan color for perfect running condition. As for the white deposits on the plug, maybe from fuel additives. Change fuel brands and see if it clears up. HTH!

I have been to Bristol twice but thats it for aditives. All other times its the cheapest 93 octane gas I can find. Should I buy an EGT gage to see how hot things are getting. Not sure if this could do it but I checked my compresion and it was between 120-130.

Chris

 I/O I THINK IS POWER PLATE! SINSE I INSTALL MINE MY PLUGS BEEN THE SAME (WHITE CERAMIC)

Well for me both cars have alky.

Both cars get the same sunoco 94 gas usually the same station.

Both have a power plate and JJ throttle body.

salvageV6 the WE4 has normal brownish looking tan nice plugs, no deposits.

GN has rather normal looking plugs excepting the white powder stuff on the ground electrode.

Reds chip in the GN, maxeffort and tranlator setup in the WE4.

I dunno.

Both run okay however. :)

Maybe something in the gas tank? Or the old stock injectors in the GN?

I have the powerplate as well. Usualy my plugs are black, from being too rich. I believe that this is the first time that I have changed my spark plugs since I put in the powerplate, but not positive. Do you guys think that I am hurting anything internally in my engine. If my spark plugs are white, what would the inside of my cylenders look like?

Thanks
Chris

It's not the Plate. I run one(with pure denatured alchy SMC) and my plugs are light tan/brown. I say that it must be the fuel(or additives in it).

Keep the ideas coming.

When you say the plugs are white, what part do you mean? The ceramic part, center electrode, ground electrode, everything?

Eric

Ground electrode pretty much is it.

Looks like powdered sugar sprinkled on it.

Comes off easily enough.

Rest of the plug appears normal such as the ceramic and center electrode with normal tan deposits and all.

Outside ring where the threads are had a bit of carbon on them but I've seen that on the other car too.

Only difference is the white stuff on the ground electrode.

I have no white deposits on my plugs. The ceramic part is real white on my plugs which I thought meant you were running too lean but like I said my O2s are around 800.

My plugs look just like salvage's. Sometimes I have O2 volts around 400, is that okay. I just changed my O2 sensor thinking that it might be faulty, but I get the same readings.

Thanks
Chris

Just thought of something. :)

I use WD-40 for lube with the alky. and water. Wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Prolly not...

white plugs

hey your white plugs are definitely usually a sign of running too high of combustion temperatures which i cause by a lean mixture. Check your fuel delivery, injector gummed up things of that nature. Hope this helps a little good luck man!

I use 2 different things in my alky tank. Marvel and WD40. Do you guys think I should buy an egt

Thanks
Chris

AN EGT Meter will definitely help with knowing where the combustion temps are. Additives will change color of the plugs to a rust look. I would eliminate the overheating therory with the EGT before looking elsewhere.

Just my thoughts
Bob

I always hated the stock injectors in the GN.

Reds 100 chip and his 93 chip rarely showed any KR with the alky.

I doubt it's too high of EGT and that car is rarely floored anyway. More of a true driver.

We'll get the answer someday. I will be pulling a plug or two this weekend on both cars. Plugs were checked/cleaned or changed out on both cars within the past month. Both run the same gas and alky. since then.

Rest of the plug looks too normal I think to be bad combustion or too high temps.

More like an additive or chemical deposit or something of that nature. It is a newer alky. install maybe burnt teflon paste from the line fittings?
