My question is how many people have there air filter mounted in front of the grill? What is the effect when it rains? or the exposer from the weather?

I DID have mine in front of the grille. 14 inch cone filter. i looked at the filter which had to have been on there for several years, probably 8 to 10, and it was horrible, had holes and everything in the filter media. i put it in the engine compartment, and found a decrease in performance, but at least i know that the weather isnt gonna hurt it anymore. it had seen better days for sure, if i were you i would put some kind of flat shield over the front of the filter, with some edges that face around the filter. that way it will still draw cold air, but wont be pelted with rain and dirt.

8-10 years on one filter?! That's nothing to complain about that's for sure. Have had mine in front of the radiator support for about 3 years now without any problems. There really isn't any harm in getting a K&N filter wet as that is how you clean them anyway. The filter is actually fairly well protected behind the stock air dam as long as you don't use over a 9" one.

That seems like an awful lot of tubing, with an awful lot of curves
and bends required to make that journey to the turbo.
I preferred keeping the filter as close as possible to the turbo,
with minimal bends. Then I brought the cold air to the filter via
large ductwork (10" diameter) from the LF wheel opening area.
This mod isn't for everyone because it required removal of some
of the plastic wheel opening, and would destroy the original
appearance, but it works awsome on my car.
IAT is reading outside air temp all the time, nice and cool:cool:
Thats my 2 cents:p

The air filter for the Big Mouth is it exposed to the weather? can you see it hanging down if you look at your car in front

No, the filter is even with the air dam, it can not be seen when looking at the car unless you are on your hands and knees! I have driven the GN in some pretty bad downpours without any ill effects. Would I try to ford streams and rivers with it? NO, but for regular driving there are no problems.

10" ductwork? That sounds interesting.

Same here. I've ran the Tomka / Big Mouth system since May of 1999 with no ill effects.

This isn't a good system for the U-Boat commanders out there, but other than that it does just fine :)

Mine was ducted RIGHT BEHIND the grille. you coudl seee it through the grille, completely, was zip tied to the cross braces on the radiator support. it was a old kit made by conleys performance plus back in the early 90s, with a 14 inch k&n filter. i even have a magazine, musclecar review i think, where they took a GNX, put this kit i had on there, behind the grille, M&H racemasters, and a conleys race chip and underdrive pulley on it, and went out and pulled off some 12.5s throught he stock unopened exhaust at 18 psi or so. when i got my car it had EVERY one of these components installed. i still have the underdrive pulley, sold the chip, still have the K&N filter kit, but thats about all. the racemasters are in the backyard, and are about bald. lol. guess all these things worked great when new, but now there are better things out there, i plan on going with the behind the headlight kind of setup, because in the grille, it gets alot of abuse.
