I am looking to get a stall converter for my 200r4 3400-3500 stall. My question is can you run a non-lock up on the street?
I would like to hear from this group including what stall your running.
thanks,
Joe

i'm running a 3000 non lock up.dont drive the car much on the hwy but i have no prob. in town driving

Art Carr N/L here. No problems. It is a good idea to run a real trans cooler, though, NOT the cooler in the radiator. N/L converters usually run high stall which equates to higher tranny temps. Run a cooler and you won't have a problem.

Thanks for the feedback.

Kevin/turbonatr, are you running a trans cooler if so what type?

turbonatr what stall are you running?, and are you doing any freeway driving?

The closest track is about 40 miles away and I would prefer to drive to and from the track. Is a 3500 stall non-lock up too much for the street/freeway?

Joe

Im running an Art Carr 3200 Non-Lockup on tyhe street with the largest B&M SuperCooler trans cooler plumbed in line (after stock cooler) I dont have a gage but the tranny seems fine. Drive to the track is about 60 miles. Went on a trip to ME last summer in 95 degree heat and it didnt seem to mind the trip. Yes the rpms will run higher on the freeway (and city as well) but the higher stall will just put a HUGE smile on your face! Good luck!

Cakes thanks for the info. What are your RPM's with your 3200 stall on the freeway?

What would you guess would be the RPMs doing 65-70 mph on a 3500 non-luck up converter with the factory 3.42 gears?

I wouldnt guess much more. The reason I chose a 3200 non-lockup was more for the future than now. Since my tranny went I just bought the best transmission around with one of the best converters around. It woke up my car a lot but once I have more motor I think it will help even more. HTH

The reason for wanting a good stall converter is because I am getting a 4.1 non-stage block built and I already have a 63-1 with a front mount. Will have to wait on a good set of heads but I would like to get a nice street/strip combo.

I'm running a B&M cooler like Cakes in both cars. The RPMs won't be high enough on the highway to really bother you with the 3.42s. If you really want to, you can run 255/60-15s which are 27" tall to bring the revs down a little. When I used to drive the GN on the street, I ran 275/60-15s (28" tall). You couldn't tell it wasn't a lock-up if you weren't paying attention.

The most important thing is to run a cooler.

Hey guys just wanted to thank you all for the feed back. I guess I will go ahead and get me the 3500 stall. I'll get back to you guys once the car is dialed in and see what it does at the track.
Later,
Joe

Joe, one thing I did notice is my car doesnt MPH as high as cars that run similar times as mine. I have run a best of 13.47 but only hit about 100 MPH. Not a huge deal to me but I just thought I would let you know
Good luck and enjoy!

I have a 3000 ac non lu and 3.73's and a 27" tire and its fine on the highway. I have a B&M cooler to help kee the temps down.

Sounds to me that not having the lockup is no big deal. Thanks again for your feedback.
Joe

its like driving a musclecar from the old days with an od trans. Quite streetable

My questions are, why a non lock? and also, what is your set up? That would mean all the difference in the world as to your stall speed. The only thing I will add is if you are running an extra oil cooler, run it with your radiator cooler. The fuild will cool faster exposed to a liquid than to air. External coolers are designed as additional cooling, not as a sole source of cooling in the vast majority of cases. Mark :D

My setup is a 4.1 block (non-stage) with a 4" bore with a 206 cam with venolia pistons and RJC girdle. Just bought a 63-1 turbo and a front mount IC. Has a 3" downpipe and no cats, two flowmasters, with a dump before, airbags and some 26" ET streets, running with 3.42 gears.
The reason for checking on a non-luckup is because I have access to a converter fairly inexpensive. Do you think that the stall would be too much?

did I miss it, or what cam do you have? Ok, I see your cam. Sorry, just a slight bit of drain bamage. It might be a little loose, but see if youo can live with it. You will also have to put a non lock valve in the car when you do this change over though. The other thing also, is if the converter is used, for the safety of your trans you should have it cut, cleaned, and checked so you don't damage the rest of your trans. Mark

"It might be a little loose, but see if you can live with it."
What do you mean by this?

"You will also have to put a non lock valve in the car when you do this change over though."
Can you give me some more info on this valve?

Joe
