I have a leaking Rear main seal on my TR, I was told by a Mechanic that if I was to replace the seal with a neoprene Fel- Pro Gasket it will still leak no matter what and the only way to fix the leak is a rebuilt of the motor.I refuse to rebuild my motor cause it's not hurt at all..Another Buick friendly Mech told me Neoprene was the right choice and can be replaced for around $250 bucks.I don't like leaks so Ima replace it.

I have replaced more than one with neoprene and they work great. You do have to remove the rear main cap but i never found it to be a problem. I puled out as much of the old rope seal as I could and the rest came out when I pushed the new seal in. Use some type of rtv, silicone or form a gasket instead of the supplied blocks that go between the main cap and block, or at least I did. Do a search, I'm sure thread are threads on replacing a rear main seal.

seal

It's a pretty easy job I've done it on a 2 post lift.I've also done it on my back on a garage floor (not as much fun) 20 dollar seal and 2 hours labor time don't = 250.00 little high IMO.There is a pretty good step by step procedure on hear to go by.

Find yourself a new mechanic real quick. Don't know of many people that replace a rope seal with a new rope seal though I am sure there are some that do. 99 out of 100 people would go with the neoprene seal. No need to rebuild your motor.

Find a different mechanic then. Go with neoprene, offset the ends of the seal so they dont line up with the bottom of the caps and use some permatex #2 form a gasket on the bottom off the caps.
