I would like to know what the benefits are to putting a shift kit into a gn.I have a basically stock 87 with 50000miles.The car is only street driven but like everyone I like to put my foot into it.Is it mostly a durability thing or is it going to make the car faster.I have heard people say they havent ever put serious power to the ground before adding one of these kits. The one I was thinking of purchasing was Bruces. Thanks for the time everyone.

Shift kits are for performance enhancement, they make the shifts points firmer and quicker as the mfg. makes them more for driver comfort rather than for performance. Thus you lose less hp/torque bettween shifts and put more to the pavement. As for durability I don't think you really gain any but you won't lose any either as long as your trans is healthy to begin with. I haven't tried Bruce's yet but the next one I get will be, it sounds like he has the best for the buck and easy to install, also non-damaging and fully reversible (undue). Mark

Santa Claus brought me the Art Carr shift kit for my 87 GN this past xmas.

I put it in a few months ago and WOW quite a difference. Before my car would hang for a second between 1 and 2 at WOT now it just drops into gear quickly and firmly and away I go.

I have also heard that as far as longevity goes...the quicker the car shifts the less heat is created. Heat as we know..is the number one killer of transmissions.

I would go for it. They are cheap and make the car a much more fun ride.

Thanks for the replies guys.I am still working through the "spring cleaning" but cant keep my mind off of the next enhancements.I think I also will go for Bruces kit, people seem to like it.Thanks again

I just got my car back from having the tranny rebuilt and added Bruce's kit....:D :D :D is what you'll see when people hear you barking second gear with no boost. Nice, firm shifts will help the tranny live a longer, happier life.

Is the kit from Bruce easily to install for the "Do-it-Yourself" kind of folks? Even if one does not have much knowledge of transmissions other than routine fluid/filter changes or leave to a transmission specialist?

Bruce's kit is pretty easy to install. All you've gotta do is drop the valve body and replace a couple of springs in it. If you're doing the kit you might as well pick up the boost valve kit. If you just take your time and relax as you do it everything will go smoothly. Just don't get in a hurry.
