Just bought a egr valve with chrome cover used off ebay. It was adverstised as 85 but the part is larger than my egr and appears to be for a 86 or 87. Originally I just wanted it for the cover so I popped the cap off thinking I can just pop it on mine...No can do! The newer egr is larger in dia than my 85...Question is? Can I take the entire 85 egr off and use the 86-87 egr. If I can will I definitley have to replace the gasket. I can easily pull mine off to see but I dont want to open a can of worms pulling it off and maybe screwing up the gasket if it cant be used. So figured I'd ask first.

I would say no...

The 85 style uses 2 bolts into the egr pipe block. The 86/87 style uses a 1 bolt claw type hold-down similar to a distributor hold down. Without that hold down piece the 86/87 egr would be loose. As far as making the hold down function with one of the existing 85 bolt holes that is a different story but I highly doubt it.

Good luck,
Jerry jr.

As you can see the one I have here has 2 bolts. Unless they made two different egr valves. Is that possible? It looks like it might go on my car but like I said, I dont want to take mine apart and find out it wont work.
The first two pics are of the one I bought. The last is the one on the car.

is there a part number stamped into it anywhere?
you could cross reference that part number to see what it fits.

The one on the car is wierd...

The one you bought looks like a correct 85 part. I have pictures with the egr black cover on a egr on a very low mileage 85 T. I'll take the cover off tomorrow and snap a pic.

The only number I found on the unit it what looks like a 8 inside a square. Its probably the right unit for the car. If thats the case then someone must have changed the one I have on my car. The dia is much smaller on the one mounted to the car. I Wonder what, If anything that would affect. Below is the pic of the number on the unit I got off ebay.
