I just spent a few hours at my dads trying to fix a sound problem on his win98 machine.

There are no sounds on Windows Startup / Shutdown /Errors etc..
If I try to preview a sound in the control panel / sounds , it doesnt play. If I go directly to a .wav file it will play fine. Audio CD's no workie either. Changed the cable and tried 2 different CD's.

I reloaded the drivers for the sound card and have the same problem.

Any gurus here have any advice ??

What did he do/change to the system to cause the sound to quit? I can tell you it DID NOT just up and quit like that on it's own. Something was changed, installed or removed to cause it.

Yeah, I tried to get that answer. It was most likely caused by my mother, she loads alot of junk that drives my fathers nuts. I really was expecting an easy fix, it is becoming a "vandetta" so to speak.
Only problem is Im not sure where to go next...
btw, I did a virus scan on the system

Sounds like you need to download some audio codecs for it, go on microsofts site and look for audio codecs.
