Since 1983 I been in 2nd shift.

Oh man I am 3 days into the week & I HATE WORKING DAYS!.

The drive in & out suks ( especially in Mass)
I had a woman on a cell phone squeeze her saab into a 1/2 car space I left in front of me woth no blinker.

Then lunch hour is a draaaaaaag! with nothing to do..

Then the drive home is as bad as the drive in.
You have to pay 110% attention with no slacking.

Then when I get home after supper I could literally & have fallen asleep.

How the F__K do you people do it? Any tips to staying awake?

I want my nights back :(

I haven't bothered to call. I figured you'd be zonked out:D If you got an hour for lunch take a 20 minute power nap.

I've been on 3rd shift since 89. I can't wait to get off this shift. Days would be nice and have a normal life :) Just leave a little earlier and relax before the shift. That's what our guys do. They have coffee and read the paper and are there well before shift change.

It will be at least 6 weeks to get your body clock to readjust Steve. Have patience, you will adjust. I could never work nights again unless I was working a club or something like that.

I'd gladly swap schedules with you. I work a swing-shift; 3 weeks of days then 3 weeks of evenings and then 3 weeks of midnights, continously for 7 years.

I'm not quite sure what you mean about 2nd or 3rd shifts. I personally have worked afternoons for 2 years, then midnights for 7 and am now on dayshift going on 5 or so. I thought happiness was midnights UNTIL I reluctantly went to days. I had the same gripe for at least 6 months until my body started to adjust. I have a 35 minute commute each way to work via freeway and simply relax and enjoy the ride with XM Radio. I stay in the far right hand lane and go 5mph under the speed limit and let everyone else fight in the other lanes and act like barbarians protecting their "space'. It's actually quite humorous watching everyone in such a hurry vying for position as if in a NASCAR race.

While I worked afternoons I found myself doing nothing but sleeping til 10-11am, watching TV, working then going to the bar. This was a ritual damn near 5 days a week. Needless to say it was a waste of time.

Midnights was a bit better but winter time was killer. Getting to sleep at 8am and getting up at 4pm or so gave me a whopping 1-2 hours of daylight. Doing this for months on end in the dead of winter secretely takes it toll on your mood and body. My wife saw the effects of this on my attitude but I myself didn't.

Get to bed early, give your body time to adjust and enjoy life in tune with the rest of the world. You'll be glad you did.

Days is the way to go....

8 years of 12 hr. swing shift 8:00am- 8:00pm & vise-versa . 4 nights on 3 days off 3 days on 1 day off 3 nights on 3 days off 4 days on & then 7 days off. throw some or a lot of overtime in & GRRR!!!.

you never get used to it. have a good day OH i mean night.

Mine's sorta like nite-mare bob's:
12 hr shifts (5am to 5pm and vice versa)

Example (one month):
M-T days,
W-Th off,
F-Sat-Sun nights,
M-T off,
W-Th days,
F-Sat-Sun off,
M-T nights,
W-Th off,
F-Sat-Sun days,
M-T off,
W-Th night,
F-Sat-Sun off

Been doing it for 10 yrs. Was better when I was single but still affords lots of time off. As you can see it flip-flops from days to night EVERY SET!! Can be tough to get used to.

Good luck with your adjustment. It'll come soon (hopefully).

I dunno how you guys stand day shift... Ive been on weekend nights (6pm-6am Fri, Sat, and Sun) for 9 years and like it WAY better than day shift. Not only is the atmosphere more laid back at work but on the commute Im going the opposite direction of 99% of traffic so I practically have the free way to myself. Plus I only have to work 3 twelve hour days but with shift premium and built in OT it works out to 52 hours worth of pay.

The down side would be that when most ppl are doing "fun" things Im working and if I want a day off on the weekend I have to burn vacation time.

To get myself back on day shift when I get off work Mon morning at 6am I just stay up all day by keeping busy. That way by about 7pm Mon evening Im so tired I can fall asleep easily and get up early on Tues morning instead of sleeping most of the day away. By doing that Im on day shift (so to speak) on Mon-Thurs but come Friday I sleep in late to prepare myself to be up all nite during the weekend.

Works for me..

People always thought I was CRAZY working 2nd shift.

It was nice!!!! you see the boss rarley, Can take cat naps, Post on TB, & be away from the kids..

You get to see SUN!!

The trick is to be at work before 6 and out by 4. Usually the traffic isn't too bad on the way home. I got to bed early every night. Usually before 8. Helps me cope with the days BS. Summer time is a differant story, workin on Buicks in the driveway lovin life!

I work 6am-2pm every day except thursday. Drive to work aint bad (ten minutes) but I go to school on nights and I too have been real zonked out lately. I eat enough and take my vitamins but just dont seem to have the energy that I once did. I am averaging 5-6 hours of sleep a night, with an occasional 7 hour and an occasional 4 hour sleep night. I used to be able to do it no problem, but have found it so hard to get up lately. I am literally sleeping through my clock radio BLASTING right near my ear, and it is LOUD! It has actually began to worry me as I thought it could be a health issue or something. I am only 26, and to me it doesn't seem right. I love my hours, but I don't know if its work thats doing it to me or what. Now to find time to finish the GN. NO SLEEP this spring. Oh well, maybe it will get better. Any suggestions?

Scott:o

I do the 6am-2pm deal too. Been doing it for 20 years. At least you do see some sun. A nice 1 hour nappy after work is good too:D

For the most part I've been working nights 9:30pm-5:30am for 10 years. Monday I'm starting evening shift 1:30pm-9:30pm. I can't wait!!
