I would like to build myself a worktable so I have a place for all my projects. I am trying to keep it under a budget I am looking to use building supplies from Homedepot, Lowes, ect. I was was thinking of two pieces of 3/4 plywood screwed together but I don't like the idea of a wood top. After some time the wood splits and you get splinters also it does not work well with oil. Maybe a sheet of metal over the wood would do it. Does anyone have any good ideas how I should build the worktable.

OK Sal here is the best $56 work bench ever constructed.
Got a solid wooden door for free from a company that was throwing it out because it was scratched. If you ask around they are not hard to find.

2x4 the length of the door that you can lag-bolt to the wall.
2 pipe flanges , 2 pieces of 2 in. pipe , 2 rubber end caps that I got from Home Depot for $43.

I use old rubber car mats when working with oils or fluids

i just built some work benches over the holidays. I used two layers (screwed and glued) of 3/4" osb as the top, i used 2 2x4's as the support legs, (would have had used 4x4's if i had them), and then top was supported by two "rows" of 2x4s along the perimeter, that were lagged into the legs. The bench top is about 40" off the floor and is 30" deep. I used the remaining 18" of the 4ft x 8ft sheet to make some shelves too. i will also be putting a 16 gauge metal top on them as well.... Very pleased with the outcome.

you can't see it very well in the pic, but the table overhangs about 6" and I installed some outlets under the overhang as well....

I used a Shelf-Links kit for my garage workbench: 2 x 4 Basics

Same basic layout as this pic: http://www.2x4basics.com/show_photo.asp?photo_number=131 but I used a sheet of cabinet grade plywood & finished/sealed it with epoxy on the worktable's top surface & just used "regular" ply for the 2 lower shelves. You should be able to find these at the local big-box home stores (Lowes, Home Depot) or do like I did & buy it on amazon.com

Use the 2 sheets of 3/4" plywood screwed together and then cover with a 1/4" piece of hardboard. When the hardboard gets cruddy remove and replace it.

Go up to lowes and see if there are any SOS returns or damaged countertops.
build your frame, 2x4s, go to harbor fright and get 4 casters so you can roll out anytime.

I made 6 of them using depo'd counter tops i found, all the same height, all with a different purpose... no pics though

As dumb as it sounds take a look in the metal scrap yards. I got a stainless one that was part of a resturant supply company trade in and it had a plastic top on it. I didn't have the room to bring it back to TX so I had to leave it in TN unfortunately,
