I installed my SMC kit yesterday and went to Lowe's to get a gallon of alchy.. well, as I'm looking for it among the many jugs of chemicals, I see one that says 'Xylol'. I read the back of the can and under contents it reads, "contains Xylene (1330-20-7) This is photochemically reactive... etc". In case it matters, this was in the paint section of the store.

Is Xylol just what the company wanted to call it, even though it is technically just xylene? I bought a gallon but haven't used it yet because I wanted to make sure this is what every one else is using to mix in their gas tank. Thanks, Josh

i just searched around a bit and a few people (2) have said it and xylene are one-and-the-same, but I just want to be damn sure before pouring it in my tank :D (I.E. since i bought it in the paint section, I wasn't sure if it might have some added chemical that aids in paint stripping..)

Yes, Xylol is the same as Xylene. I know this because I ran out
of Xylene on a Sunday afternoon and the Sherwin Williams store where I usually get my Xylene in 5 gal. cans was closed, so I
went to Lowes and got a gallon of Xylol(at twice the price) to get
me through the evening and my car ran just fine.

Should work fine if that was the only chemical listed on the back.

Don't put it in the SMC bottle. Bad things will happen. :(

Xylene

Xylol is just the "Brand" name of it since it contains other chemicals like Benzene... :) which is already in gas for winter driving (easier starting)...

"Xylol" is just a synonym for "xylenes" (plural).

There are actually several different "isomers" of "xylene".

Isomers are molecules with the same chemical formula, but in which the atoms are arranged differently.

For example, the common isomers of xylene are named "P", "M", and "O" . Because it's difficult to separate them out, and because all the isomers have similar chemical and physical properties , the mixture is simply sold as "xylol" or "xylenes".

So you sprayed Xylene through your SMC alcohol injection? What were the results?

Destroyed the pump and left gobs of gooey stuff in the bottle.

$85 repair.

DOH!

Only took a coupla' days to destroy it too. :(
