I'm going to post this on a Grand Prix forum, but I'm waiting to be approved as a member... and I've always gotten a quick response with all my GN questions here!

When the engine is cold and I go to start the car, it never wants to start on the first try (or stumbles and dies quickly after about 5 seconds), then on the second try and any other try within two hours or so it starts right up. This has been going on for about a week now.

This Monday in the morning, when the car started, the RPMs were bouncing around between around 1800 and 600 (wanting to stall, but didn't) and I couldn't drive it. After spraying some throttle body cleaner, it ran fine. I ended up taking it in to have the entire fuel and air system cleaned and now it runs great, but it's still slow to start when its cold.

I've replaced the spark plugs and air filter, and the fuel pump was replaced about 3 or 4 months ago. Oil needs to be changed soon, but I don't think that's related.

Here's the thing, when I turn the key I can hear the fuel pump prime, but it does this every time I turn the key. It's been a while since my GN ran, but if I remember correctly it only primed when the pressure was low and not every time the key was turned, but I could be mistaken. As for the Grand Prix, sometimes if I prime the fuel pump two or three times, I may get the car the start on the first try, but not always.

I'm thinking its the fuel pump, but I wanted to get your opinions on what you think since a new one from AutoZone costs about $280, and I'm about to go Guile from Street Fighter on my car if pay for it and it doesn't fix it (GOD I miss paying for parts for my GN!!!).

Any ideas?

Have a 2005 gtp comp g and have had that cold start problem for 50,000+ miles and i have 118,000 on the clock currently!! Not sure either what the problem is,i just tap the gas after i cold start it to keep it running!! I just did a full tune up minus both oxygen sensors that are going in next week and it still wants to stall also!!

Might be the key module inside the dash that a code threw once,if you are under warranty try that because my warranty is up and i wont do that yet:confused:

Verify CTS is reading properly. If it is then you should see if they have a re-flash at the dealer for this probelm.

I appreciate the responses...

I was thinking of replacing the O2 sensors too, just haven't gotten to it yet. The problem is becoming less of a hassle since priming the pump twice seems to help most of the time. I'd like to know what happens when you replace the O2 sensors though. Also, the car's warranty has been out of action for about 2 years now!

As for taking the car to the dealer, I've thought about it, but then I figured they'd find about 20 other problems in the car that I'd rather not know about! I just need the car to run until next October when it's finally paid off! If it limps to the finish line, I'll be happy!

You may need a longer priming time when turning the key on. I know this was a problem on some cars over the years. ECM flash should take care of it. Maybe you are getting injector leak down or faulty pump check valve which could be verified with a gauge as well as another problem with the cold start. Could be a couple problems that seem like one

My 03 Regal has been blowing a little white smoke for a few months. Come to find out that these things leak anti-freeze at the EGR passage within the intake. Mine would stubble a little too.

My 05 had issues like this when it was new, a reflash was the cure.

You may want to see if there is an update available
