1-2 shift is a little late. KC valve body. Any way to reel it in?

2-3 shift is OK, 5850 RPM. Pulls down to 5200.

But the 1-2 is a bit late. ~6150 RPM. Car makes a lot of boost in 1st gear and just charges through it.

Running an Olds KC valvebody from CK perf.

Any tricks out there for reeling in the 1-2?

My KC does something similar however my 2-3 is more like 500 RPM lower than the 1-2. It'd be nice to have it shift at the same RPM.

A few year back I had an OG vb in my car & the best I could get it to do was about 300 rpm diff. 1-1 6100 2-3 5800.
Near as I can tell the OG & KC are about the same, I've never tried the KC but I have one to try someday.
What gov are you guy's using?
I tried a GN gov in the OG & it went over 7000 & wouldn't shift 1-2 can't remember what the 2-3 was.

KC valve body with a BR governor.

I could live with a 6150 1-2 shift for the most part, but on the last track run she charged hard in 1st gear (27lb boost) and the trans didn't catch it fast enough. Kissed the rev limiter at 6400. Might have another issue.....

My KTF is a little late on the 1-2 shift kind of like you are describing . This is at part throttle . Part throttle 2-3 and 3-4 are just about right . Thought it might be because my TV plunger spring ( Sonnax ) is a little long . I can live with it but would appreciate an opinion or two .

You could try adding about 2 grams to the primary weight on the governor and see what happens.

Now there's an idea. What can you tell me about the governor weights and how they work? I have some general knowledge about it, like it's a centrifugal governor with 2 weights that affects the shift points and that lighter weight pushes shifts higher, but how do the weights work on an individual basis? Which one is primary and which is secondary?

thanks!

The larger weight is the primary weight. The primary weight controls the shift points more at lower shaft speeds where the smaller weight has more effect at higher shaft speeds. The governor is bascally a centrifical pressure regulator...the higher the shaft speed the more pressure the weights put on the check balls which increases the governor pressure putting more pressure on the shift valves.

Thanks I will give this a try.

What's the best way to add weight? Weld gob?
Or maybe swap the weight for a heavier one from a different governor? (end up with a mix-n-match governor)

If you have the means get a weight from another governor. I would start a little on the heavy side and trim to get the desired shift. A weld blob should work also. You could also tap a steel screw into the weight and try different length screws to add weight. I guess there are a lot of ways to do it, just depends on what means you have at your disposal.

Make sure you have an accurate gram scale so you know how much you are adding or subtracting.
Yup I talked with Jimmy at Jimmy's trans. He has a gram scale and also lots of other governors we might be able to borrow a heavier weight from.

I don't think adding wt. to the primary is going to help you your WOT shift points. I will lower the PT 1-2 though.

When I went through my KTF I took the governor apart to check it out for corrosion etc. just wondering if I got the springs right . . . . light spring with the heavy weight , heavy spring with the light weight ????

I dunno?

Just took mine apart last night to take some weight off both primary and secondary and yes, light spring on heavy weight and heavy spring on light weight.

Let me know what you're thinking. Thanks!
Thinking about adding wt. to the small wt. & finding a stronger spring for the 2-3 valve, to keep your 2-3 where you want it.
Maybe someone will come up with the secret recipe.
