10% Ethanol Gas OK??

but from the conversations on the different boards, the draw-back is the more rapid fuel consumption. on a mustang site, they have been experimenting w/E85 fuel, 15%gas and 85%ethenol, for about a year. they were able, on the dyno, produce over a 1k hp w/a 330+ cu. in. engine. The expected problems, like o-rings and seal failures, have not happened yet due to the nature of alchy. To run the e85 required larger injectors because it burns a lot more fuel to create the same hp as gas. mileage suffered by 10-15%. but their gas price was 30% higher, so the were making out by approx. 10-15%. In this area, ethanol is only .20 cents cheaper than gas, so it is not economically feaseable to run it. I already checked w/aeromotive to see if they had any neg. feedback w/running e85 thru their pumps, and they claimed as of yet no problems reported and their pumps should hold up w/no neg. effects. With the jury still out, except for the gas mileage, there shouldn't be any problems.

Pretty sure it's safe, if I'm not mistaken that's how all gas is here in IL.
Where to buy real gas
Apparently you live in a "non-attainment" area designated as such by the US EPA because of your failure to meet nat'l emissions standards for hazardous air pollutants. To improve air quality, EPA thru NJ DEP requires the use of RFG (reformulated gas). In the past they used MTBE as an oxygenator. But I suspect that because of leakage and subsequent contamination of groundwater, EPA switched to the more expensive ethanol (ethyl alcohol). If you are looking for gas without the additive, go to the nearest county that is not a non-attainment area. You will know this instinctively because the gas is at least 10 cents/gallon cheaper. Or call NJ DEP. In my case (I'm in Phila) the nearest area is about 30 miles NW or Allentown. Gas prices there were $2.75/gal two weeks ago. Good hunting.

Actually, the companies that made the MTBE asked congress for legal immunity from suits relative to leaking tanks. Congress, in the 2005 energy bill, said NO! The companies making the MTBE than said, "Oh, well" and quit making it. Suddenly 10% of the gas supply, in certain areas, was no longer there. Did the price go up? You bet! But somehow the Chinese, or the Arabs, or SUVs were to blame, not the congress or the EPA.
