I recently got a fresh .30 over 14 bolt block out of an early '85 TType & I wanted to know what the tb.com crowd thought it would handle. Is it even worth building with the normal caps & girdle? Lee you've dealt with HA's for years, what's your take on it? Thanks for the insight guys.

i had one in my 84 gn built on the cheap side and then i sold the short block to a friend for his 87 gn. he went 10.60 with the shortblock. with over 20 lbs of boost. still running after a full time last season of racing.

Let me tell ya, it wasn't over 20 lbs of boost, it was over 30 psi, he had the 30lbs boost gauge pegged. I was there to witness back to back to back 10 sec passes. They will hold up fine.

85 motor

I have a full 85" motor sitting in my garage that i'm thinking of building up after we get my 87" motor installed back in my 87" GN, if anyone knows what the guy had in his that ran in the 10's please let me know. like the cam, heads, so on and so on. thanks

Yes, I know his exact setup as far as the bolt-on stuff. I hope its ok with him that I post that here.Well, like Mybuick said the short block was a stock cheepo rebuild. We thought it had a cam in it but later when he sold the short block to someone else and the guy took it apart and said it was a stock 85 cam.

The mods were: ported heads and intake( those were the one the best set of ported iron heads I have seen in my life), Precision FM, #55 injectors, 62mm throttle body, Gen 6 DFI, TE 63-1 turbo with 4 bolt on center .63 a/r exhaust housing, stock headers, custom 3" down pipe with race gate setup. TH350 trans with 4K stall convertor and most of all a kick a$$ tune and cazy a$$ driver pushing over 30psi boost with 110 octane. I think the best run was like 10.60's @ 126mph or so. Car weigh 3550 I think.

I've been running above 127mph in my 84 block all last year and hope to run quicker this year......as far as strength, they are the same. The lifter galley has a more "machined" look in the later blocks and you have to drill and tap the front of the block for the turbo oil drainback or drain it back to the front of your oilpan.

 I am in the process of finally doing the last thing on my Limited.

So far have all new bushing poly PST. Paint by a guy in NY. Who took all glass out bare meal body.Stock white paint. He's great to get what you want.

Here's my delima....I have so far champion heads,Old Duttweiler frt. mount inter cooler.Eric's trans, vigilante convertor. Stock motor with 153,000 Org miles.Woman owned car drove her
kids to school.

I would like to get an idea, too run low boost and be in the middle 11's.
NY doesn't seem to have many guys who are free enoungh. To do the job.
And I'm not sure what to put in block.....Any input would be greatly appreciated. Bottom end and cams seem to my problem. Decisions. Had a GN was stolen. Ran the car for 5years on stock block. OK it was a 12.1 car through exhaust......sorry for long letter. This car I want to have fun in. GN, I show mostly. TIA>anyinput in PM or board would be fine....

If you want to build it right, get the middle two steel caps and an eagle crank, the bottom end will be strong into deep 10's without any worries. As far as the cam, we have been running 210/215 Ductile roller from Full throttle speed ( awesome cam setup). Ported Iron and intake, 63 turbo or better good tranny and a 3200/3500 stall converter, FM, good down pipe and a good fuel/timing management system like fast or even a Translator plus setup. We made only one pass with the listed combo as far as the turbo/cam and misc; the car went 11.20 on pump gas and 19 psi boost shifting at 5000 rpm. I think shifting at 5800-5900 I think we might have been in the 11.000's or 10.99's

I have a bone stock 85 hot air short block ,car ran 1050s 23 lbs of boost weighted of car is 3500 lbs. It is converted to a 87 set up the oiled hole drilled and all that jazz ..

Interesting feedback, you'd think since the 4.1 blocks are so close in design, they would not get such a bad rap from so many.

hey what can i do to my 84 t-type hot air as far as the oil driling and tapping u talk about thanks er and what else can i do cheap and easy to make it a little quicker than stock

EZE, the drain tap is for a 86-87 conversion where the turbo is front mounted.

As far as cheap and easy, chip, spring cleaning, alky, good rubber, cold air intake, P&P heads/intake.

Drove a car simular to your setup. GOD that thing was amazing. At my request I only wanted 19 pnds. in first gear. Since it was just a try,it shot.
And I'm careful with other peoples property.Still can't believe the power this car had. Full weight GN....Rob
