How rare are these and what are the going prices on them?

I found one that is in very good shape with 56,000 original miles.

The ole chap wants $2500 OBO

If it's in great shape that price is about right. I can't recall the exact # made but for some reason 2,500 comes to mind.

I owned a Vega for seveal years so I'm speaking from experience. They're fun to drive with a 350 V-8 under the hood and my wagon had a great hiding spot for beer where the spare tire well was. Other than that they're turds and a Cosworth is a polished one.

:D :D :D :D

I saw one literally sit on a used car lot for 3 years.

I did once have a Vega wagon with a stock 350 4bbl that someone installed. I bought it to have fun with.
It was a sleeper. had tinited windows & it was the color of the CRAYOLA box. Mustard yellow. YIKES. The guy put an SS emblem & a 2nd Gen TA scoop on it. That was the 2 hints that this was not your normal Vega.

Just from driving it around it felt like a 14 to 15 second turd..
I did not want to take it to the drag strip cause it didn't like to stop.

That's not too bad for a Cosworth. I've owned a few over the years.

They're a lot of fun to drive (If it's running right).
Not much torque down low, but the engine really winds tight, and the horsepower pulls pretty good once over 4,000 rpm.
It is after all a N/A 4 cylinder.

You'll want one that runs perfectly, and has ALL the original parts under the hood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've only seen 2-3 Cosworth Vega ever, but $2500 sounds good if it's not rusted out. I don't know how much parts are for that engine to keep it in running condition, but I see parts for them for sale on ebay a lot. I've always liked them though.

I've got a 73 Vega GT w/ 4 cyl, 4sp but it needs a fuel pump. I drove it a few years ago, but haven't fixed it since I got married/bought a house/ etc. etc.

I had a buddy in high school that had a 76. He kept immaculate care of it until one day he went to wash it and whole sheets of paint came off the top where the rust had formed. His brother had a pretty hot 73 GT 4-sp(cam,Etc) that was real fun to drive.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

All in all it seems to be a very solid car and it recently had a new black paint job put on it. It has the original wheels (very good shape), and looks like it's a 5 speed too. The interior is black and is also in very good shape, it has only had one tear in the center of the drivers seat. Pretty cool little car and looks to be all original:cool:

I wonder what this thing would run with an LC2 in it:eek:

if my memory serves me right, the cosworth vegas if its all original it should have a dual overhead cam 4 cylinder engine with a 4 speed manual trannie, yes there were a few with 350 engines in them but i think those were transplants, if you find one with the dual overhead cam engine and still in good running condition they are worth some $$$ if its an original it should say cosworth on the valve covers in the engine bay.

Yup. 4 cylinder, daul overhead cam, special Cosworth head, fuel injected (multi port) 4spd.
No other combinations.

That one that Steve saw was in a used car lot near my house. It was clean inside but the paint was going. From what I remember they were pretty good for a 4cyl. I think the Cosworth came with leather? I do remembe the dash had a number on it and special badgeing.

cosworth vega

YEP!
I got one, 69k miles, paints not the best, but all original,
they made something like 3550 of them, most were black with gold pin stripe, last of them were availabe in reds, white blue, gold, and a few other colors, about the 1st 2000 had 4 spd, then 5 spd then on, only came with 2000cc 4 cyl, dual overhead cam, 4 valves per cyl, fuel inj, stainless headers,
anything else is not original.
most had naughahyde black , but later has hounds tooth ,etc.
Value, ?????? just like a Buick GN... how much you wanna pay?
$2500 sounds real reasonable, you can buy mine for $3500
good luck

What was the compression ratio for those?

Are there cams available for them?

I wonder what you could get out of one with a good turbo install and a FAST system on there.

I've always thought those to be pretty neat for the motor and rarity.

I have two Cosworths, #1679 and #1254. Thats a really good price if everything is there. If you do buy it join this club http://www.cosworthvega.com/
Anything you will ever need these guys have or know where you can get it. Pass on it if there is any signs of rust no matter what it looks like or how it runs, it is just impossible to repair on these cars. They are really neat cars and will give any current stock VTEC Honda or import a run for the money with some minor tweaking( gutted cat, open K&Ns). Some hard to find options are posi and a 5-speed trans.

vega witha small block

omg!!!! you wanna talk about fast...imagine somethin light and drop in a 406 witha fogger:eek:  buddy has one hasnt ran with new combo yet ran in da 5s (1/8) i could buy it..but then again for 15k??? oh yeah and id have to buy a motor ouch:p

Power to weight ratio isn't a problem with a modified Vega, it's just applying all that power to the pavement. The small block chevy in my old one (which was poorly built) simply smoked the tires through 1st and 2nd. Great for show, but not good at the track.

this is true

however when u add weight to the front of the car you have to distribute..or tub it...my friends is obviously....then he had to run a wheelie bar after he stood it on the bumper:eek: whats crazy its all on a 10.5 tire..and ladder bars..although burnouts would be hella cool..your right u get nowhere fast..Im buildin a s10 now..can u say crazy burnouts??:D

2500 sounds to me like a very good price. I have wanted one of these cars for awhile now and if one like you described was for sell near me I would probaly buy it.

take it! i had a 75 vega gt i sold about a year and a half ago to buy my buick, i got 2800 out of it. it had 46k on it, and in almost perfect shape. i really wish i hadn't sold it now, but the buick is better.

if you decide you dont' want it let me know, i'm needing to get rid of the buick for college money and would love to have a cosworth.

whatever you do don't drop a small block in a cosworth, thats like putting a v8 in a tta...

yeh i guess since u have a production number..it makes this particualer car worth a little more:rolleyes: You get 5 bucks more and alot of people at car shows wondering what it is..and why it doesnt have a small block between the fenders..;) Just my opinion....ill look at a car that has a blown small block in it rather than a car that doesnt make the cut like a cosworth..if it was a hard to find car sure..not many peeps want vegas..but to each his own..again this is just my view:)
