:confused:Could anyone tell me how to tell the difference between the 84 GN and T type. I bought the car and was just wondering. Does the VIN code tell anything? Does the trunk sticker tell anything? I do know that the car does NOT have a posi rearend. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for everyones help,

Rick

as far as engines, same thing. GN is black with grey inter, T-type different colors even some with V8s.

I was told the car was factory black according to VIN #. It has gray interior with the leather center section, T tops, GN wheels. It also has digital dash the the previous owner paid $300 to have repaired. I will post pics as soon as I get the car picked up.

Thank You,
Rick

Can't wait!

You can take a pic of the of the Vin Build Code sticker mounted on the trunk lid... Left side.

All GN's are T-types..., and even more so if they are missing the "GN" build code, and all '84 GN's received the Lear's Interior... there are other tell tale clues about the GN... Walk into it believing you have the T-Type, and if you have the proper build code you may have 1 of 2,000.

No build sticker? I would be hesitant to call it a GN without one. Buick never tracked the VINs of the '84/'85 cars on what got what. We have seen some interesting fakes being passed off as GN's on Ebay.

the GN has the chin spoiler under the front bumper that wraps around to the wheelwells, and a spoiler on the trunk.
i believe the bumpers were blacked out on the GN and chrome on the T Types.
a GN has 'Grand National' badges, a T Type has 'T Type' badges.

Also look for WO2 option on the trunk sticker. If it has the dash plaque that say's GN, the Lear interior (cloth/leather interior), you should be fine. I may get the axe for this but most people would not clone an 84 t-type to an 84 GN. If you are cloning an 84 you usually go for the 87 look ;) Sorry guys :(

Thanks to everyone that has responded. It is MUCH appreciated. I will post pics later on the trunk sticker and maybe we can tell for sure.

Thanks again,
Rick

when looking at the trunk sticker, compare the vin to the one on the dash. the car is 26 years old, and it's not outrageous to think that the trunk lid could have been changed out somewhere along the line.

The WH 1 option got you the Lear seats and spoilers, too in 1984/85.
the front bumper spoiler and trunk lid spoiler as well as black out trim.
I have an 84 WH 1 with Lear seats, all spoilers, black out trim,
black and grey paint. Painted all black, it would look just like a GN,
except for the wheels are different. HTH

The car I have does not have the sticker in the trunk. The guy I bought it from said it was not the original trunk. The car has a digital dash, was that an option for a GN?

Digital dash is in both

The T-types and GN's both receved the Digital Dash.

Sorry about the loss of the build code sheet... without it you are playing a guessing game IMO. Who knows... maybe you do have a GN? Regardless... the 1984 year group is rare.

Tough to verify one way or the other without it.

This is my LOADED car

well, you could always pull up the rear seat and check for the sticker under there!

As far as GN or T, chrome bumpers only came on a T type, never a GN. WH1 is a t-type option package with 2 tone paint.

Lear interior could be added to the WH1, but I had 2 WH1's without lear interior, one with bench seats one with bucket grey...

The VIN will tell you definitively the year, factory, model, make, engine, restraints, and serial, but not too much else to that extent...

An RPO (regular production option) sticker was affixed to the underside of the trunk, and often a second one under the rear seat. If you can find one with matching vin to your car, you are in luck!!!

A lot of times you could call a dealer and see if there was an original invoice for the vehicle, but that hasnt worked for me too often.

Good luck, post pix, we would love to see the car!!!

The bumpers were black when the guy I bought the car from aquired it. It has lear interior. I will check under the seat for the sticker and hope one is there. I ran an Auto check on the car and it came back saying two previous owners. The guy I got the car from bought it in 2006 or 2007 and had 131k per the Auto check. The car currently has 132k. The report said the car was a 1984 Buick Regal Grand National / T type. I hate to keep talking about the car but I would like to know so it can be badged properly.

Thanks to everyone and all the info provided. It is very much appreciated.

didn't the GN's have a unique interior color that wasn't available on the regular Regals or T Types?
