LMAO! Sorry about the dog but it is funny after all. I'm thinking dinner for Sunday on the smoker dude. I like beef but I love a properly smoked turkey any day.

I thought the engines as a whole were built by Mercury Marine since GM didn't have experience with casting Aluminum at the time.
it wasn't that they didn't have experience with casting aluminum- they didn't have experience with dual overhead cams and it was cheaper to outsource it to them due to the ZR1 being a limited production model and it wouldn't have been worthwhile to change one of their existing plants over to build the LT5.
do some googling and read up on the LT5 engine- it was an interesting experiment that taught GM that dual overhead cams is a pain in the butt..

Seen one down here a long time ago at the street races with a built/stroked LT5 on nitrous and without a doubt it was one of the baddest sounding cars I've seen race on the street. Also, seen a nasty one at the Vette/Viper shootout at Bradenton one year, ran low 10's all day long on muscle and if I remember correctly it had an LPE stroker.

And yet they built so many Northstars and (fewer) Shortstars . . .
you forgot the Aurora V8.. how well are those things holding up when they get a few miles and years on them?
basically, they did the Northstar because they wanted to market to more upscale people that were looking to buy something like a BMW or Mercedes. they did the Aurora V8 variant for something to use in Indy cars.
DOHC didn't really hang on in the Vettes because the hardcore Vette fans didn't want anything under the hood that didn't have pushrods. the sheer mass of the LT5 is also problematic in a c ar like a Corvette compared to the lighter pushrod engines that can make more power cheaper..
