Using different wheels on the passenger side than the driver's side

I saw this done recently in a magazine (granted, it was on a pimped-out Escalade) and thought it might be a neat idea for my street rod. After all, you can only see one side of the car at a time. What do you guys think?

I really dont know, the more I think about it the more I think it wouldnt look that bad would be a nice surprise

That's just not right.

Me, I have two sets of wheels, Torque Thurst 2's and Weld Draglites. Have a set of low mileage stock GN wheels that I haven't had time to repaint the black yet and then I will have three sets.

Obviously, the opposite sides would have to be exactly the same size and use the same tires. IF (and that's a big IF) I decide to do this, I'd use 2 sets of wheels from the same manufacturer and probably even the same series.

Right now I know that at least one side will have Boyd Coddington "Harm" wheels on it. 20X8.5 rear and 17X8 front
Running a 275/35/20 on the rear, not sure on the front yet.

I just thought the whole idea of giving your car two different looks would be cool. You can only see one side at a time anyway!
If everyone thinks I'm crazy, I'll probably do it! I always did like to swim against the current! Of course that's probably obvious when you look at what kind of car I'm building!

Dare to be different!

Just make sure the PAINT SCHEME on the other side matches those wheels. ;)

With the average attention span of people at car shows you could probably paint the car 2 colors and have people come up to you on both sides of it and ask what kind of car is it? :D

I live on a corner of two streets and have had several people collecting for charity and organizations and even trick or treaters, come to the front door, walk around the street and come to the back door. :D

It's your car, do what YOU want. :)

I bet 80% of the people that would see your car wouldn't even realize it if they weren't too different. DO IT and you HAVE lost your mind.:D

I actually did this on my first car (88' Century). The stupid hubcaps kept falling off and eventually I was too lazy/poor/fed up to keep replacing full sets so I ended up with chrome outlaw style caps on one side and silver 5 spokes on the other. Took a few days/weeks for various buddies to notice. Actually didn't look too bad since you can never see both sets at the same time. I'd say to go for it if you want, see how much everyone actually pays attention.... :p

I'm with the crowd of "Your car, do what you want". But I do have a question about the weight of the wheels.

Wouldn't the weight need to be identical, if not close due to unsprung weight. I don't think I'd want GN rims on one side of a car and Welds on the other. The weight diff would really throw the handling off. IMO.

I did that on my first car, too. My '67 LeMans. If you recall the Rally II wheels in the '70s and '80s, on some cars Pontiac had painted the inner portion of the wheels the color of the car and painted the "spokes" silver. Others, however, were simply black or dark gray with silver spokes. I wasn't sure which I liked so I did one side graphic red/silver and the other black/silver. No one really noticed except to tell me that the red/silver made the car look like a "circus wagon". So I eventually painted those black, too.....

I hope not! These wheels are $2000 a set (1000 per side;) ) before you put tires (another grand) on 'em. I'm not talking about putting steel, white spokes on one side and my Boyd's on the other. I'm talking about two sets of high dollar billet wheels but in different styles.

Keep in mind this isn't for a GN! It's for my '36 Chevy street rod. Every piece on it is custom fabbed or modified in some way.

It was just a thought, maybe I will, maybe I won't. Thanks for the opinions so far. Keep 'em coming!
