I had this guy in morgan town pennsylvania, build me a monte carlo ss 2004r using a kit from ck performance, that cost $1600 so he told me, he charged me $400 for the build a total of 2 grand. from what I'm told this tranny was supposed to have alotta "chet" done to it. also has a lock-up 3500 edge conveter, and a aluminum deep pan that holds darn near 20 quarts, my lock up set up works from 2nd-3rd-4th. I also have the "bowties overdrives" TV made EZ setup. this whole set up is in my 69' chevelle, the car drove fine around town, just got the car going oct 08' with a brand new drive train encluding motor/trans/rear. I took the car down to cecil county drag strip MD. April 17th. I made two passes (1st) 13.6 (2nd) 13.2 and for the 3rd run I decided to lock the converter "after" i did my burn out. I didn't make it outa first gear without slip, high rpms shot up fast, hit second same thing, coasted out the strip, tranny temp 140 "didn't exceed that all night" found out it gets 1st and 2nd gear at low rpms/ high rpms it slips, 3rd and 4th gear are gone!!! now I was told this tranny should hold 750/750. I'm not pushing near that....yet.

I'm not sure what happened inside that tranny, I'd like to know!! I called the builder, and I'm supposed to schedual a time to take it back to him this Tuesday. btw I seen 2 gn's running at cecil that night.

as it sits now, I'm also looking to pick up another 2004r that has the "good" valve body. Either from a GN or Monte Carlo, b/c I'm getting jelious of others driving there hotrod and I can't.......this way I'd have a back up tranny, I'd be looking to build this one myself.

I would call Chris at CK peformance and check the cost, that seems high. I would also wait til you get word from the builder whats wrong before making any plans.

Probably broke the input drum, need a billet one $450..open up the check book.

oh I forgot to add, tranny fluid smelt burnt, drained the tranny fluid the color looks black cherry with no particle chunks, fluid looked clean...

what's the possibility that converter is still good and or the tranny fluid?

Tc needs to be cleaned as well as the entire trans. Anything else is half a$$ and I would not warrantee it.

burnt and black cherry = not good. Time to take that tranny out and see what went bad.

update

pulled the tranny pan off and put the stock pan on to lower it down and out of the car. "sludge" In the bottom of my aluminum deep pan i was scraping away with a razor. now I left the "sludge" in there for the builder to see.

On a side note: this situation is getting me upset. from the information that im gathering, this type of transmission seems to be the most fussy of the bunch "the stars of the planets have to be aligned in such a way for this thing to work correctly" going back and knowing then what I know now, I probably would not have picked this tranny nor would I have picked the big brother 700r4 b/c that's a power hogger so I hear beside the fact that its just another automatic. Heck for the money I got invested in this setup I could have added 1 grand and had a Tremec TKO 600 fully installed in my car..

whats wrong this this cooler

I've been told this cooler isn't good enough for the 2004r?

Maybe I'm asking all the wrong questions, the list seems to be very long on the can't do's of this transmission, so let me re-think and re-vamp....What can you do with this tranny?

the motor infront of this tranny, also my very first engine build. On a side note, I also set-up the rear too, first with 3.73's didn't like them as much so I set up a set of 4.56's

guess I'm going to go on a learning curve, the builder is just not responding to my messages, and its been 2 weeks and nothing has been done. Well something is getting done today, I'm gonna yank the transmission apart my self, I've gotta run an erran. but ill be back in 4hrs, any guidance or info would be greatly appreciated.

I wanna know what's inside this transmission for this kinda money.

update!!!

okay guys the builder got back to me right before I was about to tear it appart myself, I took the tranny back to him, we both took it apart on the spot, he showed me the billet forward drum and billet imput shaft and something else that was billet "i forget" so it seems to have alot of the good parts. Only problem was in the foward billet drum.....the clutch packs. when you take the clutch pack out of the drum starting with the retainer clip, then the clutches and the last thing in the drum "that steped spring washer" whatever they call it, it was bent poped out and looked to have the clutches fully engauged, with burned the clutches out. Now the guy said he's gonna look up something about an aluminum piston to replace that......anybody know anything about this?
