I am running a 350/2004R combo in a '64 Chevy II Wagon. The trans is about 3 years old with probably less than 10,000 miles on it. It is a Level II from Bow Tie Overdrives. When I first installed it, the trans would auto-shift the 1-2 shift at WOT at about 5,400 RPM, even with the shifter still in first gear. BTO suggested I reverify the the shifter installation and when that didn't fix it they sent me a new valve body to try. That was nearly three years ago and since I installed the new VB I have have had no issues. I have been able to shift at 6,000-6,400 RPM with no problem.

About a month ago I wrote on this site that I had lost my rear tailshaft bearing. I was in a bind as I was about to move to OHIO so I took the car into the local Cottman Shop to see if they could repair it. They repaired the bearing and installed the repaired driveshaft (straightened, balanced, new U joints and new yoke). When I went to pick it up, the car would not shift out of first gear and would free wheel over about 2,000 RPM. They ultimately figured out the problem, (three tries) the govenor gear had stripped due to the play in the tail shaft prior to the repair. Unfortunately, they installed the wrong gear and my speedo is now off by 33%, but that is not my real problem.

Since then everything has appeard fine. Automatic mode is fine and manual mode appeared fine but admitedly I had not done any full tilt passes. I went to the track yesterday for the first time since the move and repair. Six passes and on every pass the trans auto-shifted the 1-2 shift even though I still had the shifter in first. Second gear manually shifted at 6,400 RPM with no problems. Neither the TV or the shifter had been messed with.

What could have changed? I was told that the govenor gear has noting to do with the shift RPM (which I thought was strange). I am running 26" tall tires, 3.73 gears and I think they installed the white govenor gear insted of the green one they took out.

Any suggestions as to what may be the problem?
Why would it change?

This isn't anything that would have changed when they replaced the govenor gear, is it? It didn't start doing this until they changed that gear. Could TV adjustment affect this?

Chris,
I'm not doubting you are correct, I just don't understand how what was OK would now, not be OK when it wasn't messed with.

Any other help or explanations?

thanks,
