Hi from New Zealand,
new to list - have TCI TH400 #211005 running behind 461BBC with mild twin turbo blow-thru set-up. This trans does not see severe standing start duty as the car is a road race vehicle and is also a bit undertyred. Recently snapped something as boost built to max in second gear - now has completely nothing in any gear, but no nasty noises, no leaks. I haven't pulled the trans down yet but suspect input shaft as I can twist it very freely with thumb and forefinger - definitely feels like there is no drum attached. The trans was operating otherwise perfectly in competition. I have procured a new HD input shaft and drum assembly from TCI, as well as their premium race rebuild kit.
My questions:
1. I think I can just pull the pump, and remove the forward clutch housing and direct clutch housings right out (i.e. go as deep as the manual 2nd band) without having to remove valve body or servos?
2. I want to replace frictions and steels etc in all the areas that impact on the trans torque capacity in top gear and the crispness of the 2-3 shift, do I need to go deeper into the trans to replace these consumables, or are they all in the forward and direct clutch assemblies.
3. If there is no evidence of debris at the shaft break point, and if it is a clean break, is it prudent to only partially disassemble like this or am I asking for trouble?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Cheers, Andrew Robertson
