It is what you get used to. It's also amusing to hear people talk like OD transmissions have been around since cars began driving on roads. Now you hear how a non OD trans will overheat, can't be driven on the highway, etc....yet all these T-400's, 350's and powerglides came from a production car somewhere.
The largest part is what YOU want from a trans. If you want to program it to shift automatically and have OD for 3hr interstate drives with the stock 3.42 gear, the 80e is a good yet more expensive choice.
I prefer the T-400 with a manual valve body myself. They are a cheaper trans, with a 3.23 rear gear and 28" tire they can run 70mph down the interstate, you can beat on it for years and I actually like the manual valve body and shifting it myself. I want to feel like I'm driving the car. Making a full throttle pass and having the trans shift itself is boring to me. I guess because I like driving a manual trans and shifting gears crosses over to the auto's I've owned. With a manual valve body you don't have to down shift, you can coast to a stop light, pull the shifter back into 1 and start over. Or if you don't like shifting gears, you can still run a vacuum modulator with an auto shift valvebody but I prefer the manual with a trans brake much more.
