ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE CARS!

The 1965 Chevelle was available with the L-79 option, which was a 327-350 hp motor.

Also, but mega-rare, was the Z-16 option, which came with a 396-375 (some say 425) hp engine.

HTH :)

his is the 350 option, so what do they run 0-60 and in the 1/4? i thaught the l79s were 300 hp?

Nope, the L-79 was the 327-350...aluminum intake, small Holley single-feed, nice upgraded camshaft, good pistons, etcetera, that the 327-300 did not have.

I had a great friend who bought one new. He added a set of Banjo Matthews worked heads, headers, 4:56 gears, a larger Crane cam and a 3310 780cfm Holley.

With slicks, airbags & mega-traction...the best he ran at the track in those days was a 12.70, which was VERY respectable.

On the street, it FELT like a 9-second ride, because it HOOKED & WENT, while the big-block musclecars were frying tires.

My friend & I made a lotta fun-money with the friendly street-racing of lots of higher horsepower cars, that wonderful pre-Vietnam summer.

Wow, what a rush remembering those Glory Days!

What a car! What times we had! :) :) :) :) :)

FROM THE INTERNET MUSCLECAR ARCHIVES

"Clearly the hot ticket was the L79 version of the 327.

Rated at 350 horsepower, this mighty mouse sported factory hardware that rivaled even the best stuff down at the local speed parts emporium. Forged high-compression pistons, a performance-profile camshaft, big-valve heads, and an aluminum intake mounting a four-barrel Holley comprised the basis of this tarmac terror. Chrome engine accents finished off the package, including the valve covers, oil filler and cap, and the unique dual opposing-snorkel air cleaner. When strapped into a lightweight package like the Nova (less than 3200 pounds, ready to run!), well, you don't need much imagination to figure out the rest. Out of the box, the L79 was good for a 15-second quarter at about 95 mph. With a few judicious tuning tricks, headers, and some much needed slicks, even a novice could click off 13's without much difficulty."

Since the article you posted mentioned the nova, it should be stated that the L79 option was not available in that car (nova/chevy II) until 1966. They were 327/350hp and all L79's came with a 4spd and 12 bolt rear. There was also a 1967 L79 nova/chevy II but only "7" TRUE L79's were known to have been produced..

Sorry, I know alot about the chevy II's (owned a 1966 chevy II SS 327 for 9 yrs) but don't know a whole lot about the 1965 chevelle.
A nice car for sure...

EQ442,

Without knowing either car or either driver, kinda hard to say.

If I knew where there was a '65 SS, Maroon, w/black interior,
4-speed...equal in shape & condition to our GN...our GN would be for sale.

I'd better get off Memory Lane at this intersection! :)

ahhhh. My speciality. I truly doubt he has a REAL L79 powered Chevelle. Quite rare and doubt that if he did have on ethat he would race it. Its most likely a garden variety 350 small block that he thinks has 350 hp. (seems they all did) lol
I owned a 300 hp 327 65 El Camino and a *REAL* YES I SAID REAL Z16. Sold it in the mid 80's. Had 11k miles on it and was a ex Philly street race car. Found it in a garage in NE Philly in 77 and bought it for $2800 and sold it later for quite a bit more:)
Red, black top and interior. Had the power windows, tilt/wood wheel and vacuum trunk release, am/fm multiplex and all 4 speakers were still there. Fun car.. Had ladder bars, cragar S/S's, 4.11's, tach on the column.. all the 70's street stuff.

The chevelle will see tailights from about 100 feet out to infinity.

Those cars come from a different time. When slicks, headers and big carbs were needed to run high 12's, and low 14's were the norm.

My buddys N/SA car runs 12.7 and its a 64 Chevelle 2dr wagon (way cool car).. 283 4 barrel powergluide factory carb and none ported heads:) He went 11.7 with his 327 and a PG..... Its not really a street car though but sure is sweet:) There is a picture of it in my photo alblum called friends cars..

A well tuned stock L79 Chevelle would most likely be a low 14 second car in street trim and as such would probably be looking at a Buicks tail lights in a race on radials. The L79 was basically the same as the 365 horse 327 installed in the '65 Corvettes minus the solid lifter cam. Also same long block as the '65 fuelies.
Yes, a pretty rare car. What most guys dont realize is that the L79 was available in Chevelles up to the 1968 model year; probably because marketing of the SS 396 models over shadowed it.
67-68 models were rated at 325 horse and the 65-66 models at 350. All had a pretty stout (for the time) hydraulic lifter cam.
