just purchased a shifter and console out of a 87 gn and want to put in my 82 sport coupe. sport coupe has linkage from column shifter and gn uses cable. are the tranny's different? mine has a th350c. are there brackets i need to adapt one to the other ? please help me.

'87 GN has a 200-4R overdrive (4 speed) tranny, console/shifter should still work if you have the cable, you'll need the cable mounting braket that bolts to the trans pan or modify the one from the GN if you have it. ;)

You will also need to change the shift gate on the shifter since the 84-87 GN's used a TH2004r (4speed)
You can find one in a 78-88 Cutlass as they used the same shifter as the Buicks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shifter should still work, just will be in drive when it says overdrive and so on with one extra slot it will never reach.

No, the spacing on the gates below reverse are different. But the gates do unbolt so if you have a shifter and can get just the gate, you can replace it.
