I am considering the purchase of an 84-87 GN or ttype. From what I've seen, the 84 or 85 cars are up to 50% cheaper than the 86/87 IC models. So to buy an 86/87 that's comparable (in miles, body, paint, etc) to a $4K 84/85 GN, I would be looking at spending around $8K. Since I am on a budget, $4-5K at the most, I will more than likely be looking for an 84/85 GN or possibly a ttype.
My question is on the collector value of the earlier GN's. Will they tend to increase over time along with the 86/87's - of course obviously they will not reach the same $ value. And although I am not in the market for one as an investment, since I plan on owning it long term I want a car that will hold its value if not increase over time.

I don't look for them to drop in value at all. If you get one and get it "right" you will certainly loose no money on it. I agree with you that they will never reach the value of an 86-87 but being a TR they will continue to go up in value as time moves along. Just my 2.

I have seen a guy local to me selling a real nice one. his price went from 9k to 6k & still dropping. If I had the $$ I would offer him $5k. They will go up later than sooner. If you can sit on it you stand to make money.

What is nice about the 84/85 is they look just as nice as the 8687. most folks know jack about them. Only the true Turbo guys really know the differences.
If it means getting your foot in the door to a TR then BUY it & be happy.

I wouldn't go near a hot air car with a 10' pole ...  here's a few of them :p do ya think I hate them ??? they don't even make a good parts car !!

damn i love mine, guess thats just me.The car has been real fun (not real fast) but still fun and i got about 6,000 into the whole thing body, paint and all though it would be nice to just buy parts that other people made to go fast
rather than have to make them myself
must be nice to have lots of money and a car that came with a intercooler from the factory ?

I love my hotair

If you plan on keeping it for 5 to 10 years you should be in good shape. Sell it short term and you may not do so well.

I've never been embarrised by owning a hotair. Even though some GN owns try to build themselves up by ripping on the hotairs. They are a great platform to modify with, they are very rare and if you go to Bowling Green you see that all most all of the hotair there run 12's or faster, while most of the intercooled cars aren't modded as much and are sitting in the car show  when there's 1 hotair for every 1000 intercooled car. Ask yourself this: What is worth more a '53 vette or a '65 vette? Would a '65 vette owner look down on the '53?

Using Corvettes as a comparision isn't really a fair comparision. There were a bizillion differnet engine/option combinations where as we are only talking about 2 different engines in the same basic car. I wouldn't buy a hotair if your top priority is investment. Their value will be proportional to their worth. I guess there is a reason why they are 50% cheaper than an IC car. If you buy a $4000 car it will always be worth that. Buy a $12K car and it will always be worth that. These things dont appreciate if you drive them. As for me I dont care if it is a HA. When you are talking Regals they look the same on the outside and you dont drive WOT on the streets all of the time so why does it matter how fast it is? Reguardless of what year it is any of them are still faster than 99% of the cars out there anyway.
