what type of steel are 84-85 headers made of ?

The cheapest stainless that GM could use for production, and it's 83-85.

I used standard steel mig wire to weld mine. It's so close that it will weld fine if thats what your asking.

Per bison, inconel will hold up better than stainless or MIG mild steel.

It's a cheap 409 grade of stainless.

i found it best to weld with a cast iron nickel rod and the tig.

the headers have pretty much crystalized over the years due to heat cycling, so it acts like cast iron after all these years. the nickel will flow into the weld better.
