Having some problems getting my 86 running again after a rebuild. It cranks over, and we've got fuel and spark, but it doesnt seem to be firing at all. It starts cranking pretty fast initially, then after a second or two it slows a bit. Sort of like the ECM is pulling in more timing or something? Seems strange. I am pretty sure we've got it timed right, was thinking about trying to test the crank sensor to make sure its ok. We've got precsion power 42.5# injectors with a chip that they made for my application. Any ideas? Where do we start? Thanks a lot!

Sounds like the cam sensor was installed wrong? Do a search on cam sensor and you'll find the proper method of installing the sensor corretly. Ask me how I know.

Thanks for the reply. We made sure #1 was at TDC, installed the timing chain Dot to Dot and then dropped the cam sensor in and followed the instructions on this site. Does that sound right? Thanks.

You've got fuel and spark right? I always hit the basics on these deals. You didn't mention compression (air is pretty easy to assume). Have you checked for compression yet? I know that may sound REALLY simple but I've had it happen before. (timing gear was in wrong because I wasn't paying close attention). Did you have an aftermarket chain with three keyways (positions)?

Same thing happened to me.. engine turned over kinda fast like there was no real compression slowing it down. Opened a valve cover (after numerous profanities) and sure enough those valves were not dancing to the beat of the song. :(

Take a check.. and look from there.

Yeah, we've got a timing gear with three keyways. One has a mark with a triangle, another is a square and the last is a circle. We used the one with the circle which according to the directions was 0 deg. The engine turns over for a sec or two at what I consider normal speed(I think), then it just slows a little bit. We also installed a mini starter as well, so that might be throwing off my judgement as to what normal cranking speed is. Thanks.

Any popping or backfiring, anything else out of the unusaul?
Still sounds like a cam sensor (don't ask me how I know either?), or the crank sensor.
Never wanting to overlook the obvious...did you hook up the ecm wire (orange) at the battery?

The orange wire is hooked up. There is no backfiring or popping of any kind. It just keeps turning over.
