Why does it have a rebuilt title? Damages that incurred, theft recovery, flood,
frame damage? If it was flood or frame I would pass. JMO

Could be 169000..... 269000.... I would only consider it.... IF:

1.) I found out the exact history and was OK with it.... preferrably with pics...and talking with who owned it prior to and when it got this "rebuilt" title
2.)I was not buying it for an investment.... "rebuilt" cars will always bring less $$ than an otherwise equivalent car that doesn't have the "rebuilt" title.
3.)It was a great price... and I wanted a driver....

I concur with idea of passing on the car if there was frame damage that has not been correctly addresse or flood damage. The electricals are bad enogh to begin with to have to fight with water damage issues.

However, if it's just a fun car, and was salvaged for a fender bender or theft, then I don't see a problem with it. Don't pay alot for it and don't expect to be able to sell it for too much either...

You might be better off paying less for a clean title basket case and building it yourself. That way you know what it has and what you've got into it and a clean title car will hold value...

selling price was 7 grand
thought maybe i could get into it for about 6 grand...
it was a drug repo.... which i beleive was to case for the rebuilt title
it was sold to current owner with a new vin number per state requirement on siezed automobiles....
but for now until i do more investigating i think ill pass on it.

Check with your state laws. because my buddy bought a car from state of illinois. same deal. it was seized and when he got the title it was just regular title from the state. that was about five years ago. if you do buy it. make sure you are gonna keep it because it will be hard to sell.

It depends on why it has a "salvage" title. The car that i own was stolen/recovered and unmolested back in 1990. They changed the vin number but when i registered it the title came back good blue Texas title. I have a friend that made me a factory looking vin plate and installed it back in on the dash. The other state had stuck a little self sticking foil sticker by the driver side door stricker.lol

I should get a carfax and see if anything turns up on my car. I do not really care i have had it since 1990 and plan on keeping it for decades to come.

I bought my 87 Grand National with a rebuilt title.
Car was involved in an accident 15 years ago.
I had the car checked out,no signs of any frame issues,etc. and made the buy/swap ($2500 and a built Chevy 396 got my GN)
Still has the GM vin# too (I am not a fan of state issued VIN tags)
I say go for it.

I live in NJ . I have a friend that bought a car with a salvage title and he is catching hell . He has to drive the car once place to be inspected than has to take it to new Jersey DMV . this is what he says I am not stating law .the bottom line is he said the aggrivation is worth the savings .

i have one with a reissued vin plate that was a theft also. any chance your friend would make a vin plate that had some factory look too it?

**14Mins** my car also has a rebuilt title with a State issued VIN plate. Any chance your friend would make an original looking plate for me?? That would be a huge accomplishment as I have been looking for 2-3 years for someone who can do that with no results.

Another thing to keep is mind was when the rebuilt brand was applied. 10 years ago when I got my first GN the book value was $1650 on it. (the one that was stolen this past Easter).
If a shopping cart hit our cars back in 1996 and someone made a claim, it'd be totaled since an original car would need an all over repaint.
Either that or it's had the hell crashed out of it!

I bought my 87 Turbo-T with a salvage title for $2500 two years ago. It was a theft recovery and according to the State of Utah my car has no value. I have no problems renewing the registration as long as it passes the emissions and safety inspections.
